Easy to build; exactly what I expected
I read some reviews before purchasing and was worried I would be disappointed. I was not. This is just fine for the money I paid and will do the job nicely. The instructions were very easy to follow. The total build took me about 20 minutes from start to finish. I put it together by myself and needed just a philips and a hammer. One thing I wasn't expecting was the instruction requires (or recommends at least) that you glue the dowels. I didn't have any more wood glue, so I went out and picked some up before building it. I needed more wood glue anyway, so it wasn't a big deal to get more. I did read some comments that said their instructions were missing. I admit that I first thought mine didn't come with instructions until I broke down the box for the recycling bin. I found the instructions tucked between the cardboard and the outer most styrofoam board. So, if you do not find your instructions right away be sure to completely remove all styrofoam before giving up. It may be tucked away. All in all, for under $40 this will help me organize a lot of my closet clutter, and I think that's a fair deal!

Much Better Than Expected (Based on Reviews)
For the price, coupled with what I'm using it for (top closet storage), this item is perfect. ASSEMBLY ISSUES Putting this thing together was a big mess. However, all of the assembly problems stemmed from human error. My main problem was not paying attention to the back of the pieces versus the front. I highly recommend that you carefully review the photos in the booklet before you start gluing or screwing things. I had several pieces turned around. It's not totally clear in the booklet, but it's fairly obvious once you're midway through and everything is screwed up. Once I figured this out, everything went smoothly. I can see that some other customers had the same issues as me from their photos. ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW I guess I'm used to the simplicity of Ikea assembly, because the complexity of this threw me for a loop! But, if I'm fair, that has more to do with my casual laziness than problems with ClosetMaid. In fact, I prefer this type of assembly. The end result is much more stable than anything I've bought from Ikea. Also, there are some thoughtful inclusions that I appreciate (the screw covers, wall mount, and specialized center screws for clean lines and extra stability). VALUE/DURABILITY Honestly, I was going to get three of these, but after reading the reviews, I became very concerned with the manufacturing and durability. I'm glad I ordered one though, because it's exactly what I wanted and expected. The boards are solid enough for my use. There weren't any issues with guide holes (except for human error). If you need a simple closet storage solution, this is a good choice. I'm going to order two more right now...

Paid $34 for Garbage
Not even worth $10. First problem - it's not as easy to assemble as Ikea stuff, and requires wood glue. Not a huge deal, but was a little disappointed that it would take a bit longer to assemble than expected. Second problem - instructions are missing a lot of simple but important tips and information. This results in lots of time wasted, and not realizing you've done something wrong until you are well into the project and have to undo your work. Third problem and the deal breaker - the quality is AWFUL.... AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. I can't say it enough. The pieces were manufactured very poorly, with holes being drilled too deeply. The wood is like sawdust... not compact enough, not enough glue... it splits left and right. even the little dowels break through the other side of the board with very gentle tapping. Not even hammering, but just letting the weight of the hammer drop an inch onto the dowel. As gentle as can possibly be done. With the wood breaking apart at every step, I realized it wasn't worth my time to assemble something that will look like garbage before I even finish (and certainly won't last), so I stopped and literally threw it all away. So bummed to have wasted $34 that I can't afford to blow. I will try to contact the seller and will update this review if I hear back.

It Does What It Says It Does. But Not Much More.
I purchased two of these units, and just finished assembling the first of them. To begin with, shipping was much faster than expected--despite an estimated delivery date of tomorrow (January 25), the package arrived two days ago, just ahead of the winter storm that you're all sick of hearing about. Packaging was...confusing. Both boxes were wedged diagonally into a much larger shipping box which could probably have held a medium-sized refrigerator, with nothing more than some brown paper tossed in to prevent shifting. However, the inner boxes did hold up pretty well, and at least on the one I've put together everything came through undamaged. Assembly was fairly easy, although the diagrams provided leave quite a bit to be desired. If you are completely lost in assembling anything more complex than a sandwich, you'll want to find someone else to do it for you...but if you can puzzle out some of the less-than-precise instructions, you'll be fine. The assembly instructions indicate that glue (not included) must be used to hold some of the wooden dowels in place, but I opted to skip that step and see no loss in sturdiness as a result. You will need to have a philips head screwdriver and a small hammer available. As far as construction goes, I did find one dowel hole which had been drilled far too deep, but this was "fixed" by stuffing a piece of plastic into the hole. Again, the instructions are not the most detailed I've ever seen, so you'll want to be careful in ensuring that all of the finished sides are facing the same direction before screwing anything in (particularly if you do use glue). However, once you have everything lined up properly the screws go in easily and the finished product looks as nice as can be expected in the price range, and it is quite sturdy. Additional wall-mounting brackets are provided for those who plan to stack units. The cubby holes on the second level are pretty small, which will limit their usefulness. Large enough for a few books or compact discs, but you're not going to get much more in there. With the backing nailed in place it's also unlikely you'll be able to use them for shoes, unless you wear a particularly small size. The spaces on the bottom are much wider, however, and the backing strip does not cover these. The firmness of the build allows for larger items to be stored on top as well; I currently have a laundry hamper sitting on the top shelf, with no bowing apparent. Overall, worth the $35-40 price point, but not something you can use in place of a dresser or bookshelf and certainly not an item to be passed down for generations. I'll update as necessary over time. Update 3/21/17: More than a year later, nothing has changed. Unit one is still supporting a heavy laundry hamper and showing no signs of wear, while my old CPU has found a place atop the second unit which is also holding up beautifully. At this point I can comfortably say that only things holding this item back from a 5-star review are the poor assembly instructions included and the small storage areas inside the units. Other than those two items, a very well-engineered product which is quite fairly priced.

Used as a shoe rack in dorm room
Great item I used as a shoe rack for my daughter’s dorm. Looks great and easy installation. The stability is great holds all her shoes. Very sturdy and also functions as a desk hutch too! I bought 2. The versatility is great! A must for college students!

Almost bit not quite.
This shelf seems some what sturdy and wonderful to a certain point. The holes for the dowlings weren't drilled deep enough on some and were too long on other holes. (The dowling came throu the top.) The boards split in many places and, they weren't clearly marked which made assembly difficult. I can overlook some spots being split because its in a closet and no one can see it. Taking this product down to send it back would be annoying. I would love another one like this style but the place that I need it, is too public, the flaws would show. Therefore, I'll look elsewhere for one. Overall, it does what it's suppose to do. But in the future, please make a better quality product. I like the idea.

Great for expanding closet space up⬆️
This is awesome on the top shelf of my closet. I can fit bins into the slots & there is room above it for shoe boxes! Great for small closets to expand space!

It's very solid and sturdy. I like the variety of cubby sizes
Slightly more complicated to put together than other ClosetMaid products. Just make sure you follow the pictures in the instructions. I started doing it right to left instead of left to right (or vice versa) figuring it didn't really matter, but I had to undo it because about half way through I couldn't figure out how to flip flop the process (I may have just been having pregnancy brain but I really couldn't remedy the situation). When I started over following the pictures, it went together perfectly. It's very solid and sturdy. I like the variety of cubby sizes. It arrived with a slight flaw on the edge of one of the pieces, but it doesn't bother me enough deal with returning it.

Compact and Solid
Bought this to store hats and gloves in the upper space of the closet. It is perfect for that purpose. Not terribly difficult to install. The pieces are labeled (A to G) with pretty good illustrated instructions. A couple of tips. You don't need to use glue on the dowels. They are there to hold the pieces in place while you screw them together. Also, the screw holes are all pre-drilled so the screws should not offer too much resistance. If they do, it means the pieces are not properly lined up.

Perfect for the purpose
It’s perfect for the purpose and easy to assemble. The colour is nice and it’s not flimsy.

Don’t buy, broke before finished assembling
Didn’t even finish assembling and returned it. Pieces were backwards and holes didn’t match up so pieces broke off.

Great price and good quality
This came exactly as advertised. A prospective buyer should note that the sections in the top are quite small; they are literally for shoes or something equally as small, like a hat. I didn't check the measurements so I was a bit surprised when we got it together, but it still suits our purposes. My only other complaint would be that I ordered two and they came in a MASSIVE box, which meant the concierge in my building would not accept the parcel and I had to go out of my way to go to Purolator to pick it up. That inconvenience could have been avoided by sending the items separately or sending them in a box without so much wasted space.
