3-D Geometric Origami: Modular Polyhedra

I love origami, and had this book in the past, so I reordered it with some paper (gave the original to my nephew who showed an interest.) It's a relaxing activity and the results are really impressive. I had previously made the stellated dodecahedron that's on the front cover out of Hershey Minatures wrappers. It looked great and I gave it away to a friend. I will be making another one.

The book is excellent but if you expect to see color picture there is none, and this could be a discourage for some people.

I bought it for my mom, and she had a blast. She made all kids of origami. She is hooked!

Really interesting but the directions are tedious, vague and not easy to follow

Nicely illustrated, pretty easy to follow. Tried a few of the models finding them fun to do. Wouldn't recommend for someone just starting.

This slim volume has some nice features that make up for a lack of illustrations and model photos, including a clever pentagon template, tips for cutting equilateral triangles & hexagons, and suggestions for cutting multiple pieces for the projects. I especially enjoyed working with the triangle, simple square, and the spike ball modules, which I used to make solid, satisfying models. The "triangle edge module" can be used to make a nice tetrahedron or an icosahedron (which helped me see the relationship between that shape and a dodecahedron). I skipped a couple of spiky models that required glue, but I was generally very pleased with the book.

Extremely dry technical illustrations, no step-by-step instructions. This is an old, technical manual that assumes you are already an expert in normal and advanced origami, with a new cover that gives the impression it's going to give you step-by-step instructions. However, the first step in each project is actually a finished origami base, such as the "frog" base becomes the "crane." But far more complicated. My 12-yr-old has an engineering mind and folds origami and cuts kirigami at expert levels, but this non-kusudama guide left us both struggling. Search here on Amazon for "kusudama" to find the correct 3D origami.

I ordered this book for some fun math activities at the end of the year. I'll need time to learn how to make the projects; some of them are quite complex. From a geometry standpoint, the book will be a useful extension at school.

Das war bereits mein 4. Origami-Buch dieser Autoren und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Es finden sich wieder viele neue Module und Modelle, zu denen sie zusammengesteckt werden können. Die Autoren empfehlen bei manchen Modellen sogar ausdrücklich den Gebrauch von Klebstoff, was ja sonst geradezu verboten ist. Ich finde das aber in Ordnung, wenn es zur Stabilität der Modelle nötig ist. Interessant ist auch die Verwendung von nicht-quadratischen Papieren, auch wenn dies natürlich einen höheren Aufwand beim Zuschneiden bedeutet. Die Faltdiagramme sind gut verständlich und kommen nahezu ohne Text aus, sodass für das Nachbasteln nicht unbedingt gute Englischkenntnisse nötig sind. Für Anfänger ist dieses Buch nicht unbedingt geeignet, diese sind mit dem "Beginner's book of modular origami polyhedra" der gleichen Autoren zunächst besser beraten. Es gibt auch ein paar Schwarz-Weiß-Fotos mit Verweisen auf die Anleitungen zu den entsprechenden Modulen. Die angegebenen Seitenzahlen stimmen leider nicht immer, sodass es frustrierend sein kann, wenn man das falsche Modul gefaltet hat und sich wundert, warum man das Modell nicht zusammen gesteckt bekommt. Da ich mit etwas Suchen aber doch die richtige Anleitung gefunden habe und das Buch ansonsten toll ist, gibt es trotzdem 4 Sterne.

Descrive come si ottengono le varie forme dal punto di vista geometrico e matematico. Non è molto lungo, e ho sempre l'impressione che vorrei sapere di piu'. E' comunque un buon libro teorico (tutto in inglese!)
