Packaging nullifies the compostable diaper!
Full disclosure, I haven’t even used the diapers yet but I can already say I will not be ordering them again.I purchased these diapers purposefully, to avoid plastic in the landfill. I cloth diapered both my children but my 3 yr old is still not fully night time potty trained and I didn’t want to upgrade to the next size up cloth diaper for just the occasional nighttime wetting.I was so excited that these diapers are 100% compostable, unlike other more environmentally friendly versions that are unable to make this claim. Then I received them, and they were wrapped in not just one plastic layer but two plastic layers! One outside the Broody Chick box and one inside to hold the diapers. And neither layer of plastic is labeled with a recyclable symbol, so into the landfill they go.What is the point of making a diaper that is compostable when your packaging undoes all the good!

Pretty good diaper
I'd like to start off by saying this review is for using Broody Chick as an overnight diaper only and this is based off two nights' use. We cloth diaper during the day but my daughter is growing out of the covers we use for her overnight diaper so in the meantime, I was looking for a compostable diaper also to potentially use as travel diapers.First off, I like the fact that they're thin, plain, and not like a burlap sack in texture. They are surprisingly huge in length though, I suppose to cover the rise of a baby in the weight range for the Toddler size. My daughter is currently 23 lbs and the first night we used this I wasn't sure how to fit it on her because the tabs and waistband sat so high the diaper would slip down and leave a huge gap between her leg and the gussets.Surprisingly, she didn't leak through the next morning. I was sure I would find a wet patch in her crib. I was also impressed that the diaper stayed thin, not bulking up like traditional disposable diapers. So on night two, I was able to secure the diaper better and there wasn't such a large gap around her legs. However, this morning, I found her soaking wet. She'd wet through her pjs, sleep sack, and sheet. I guess she surpassed the diaper's limit because it was definitely full.So we're on night 3 this evening and we'll see how things go tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I've been throwing the diapers into a biodegradable bag as they get used. These are obviously pricier than disposables but if it means there are less diapers sitting around forever I feel it's a fair trade.*Update*I decided to order a size smaller (for babies up to 19 lbs) and oddly enough, these fit the baby better. But again, she seems to surpass the diaper's limit overnight. I've had to change her sheets so many times. I may have to go back to traditional disposables. =(

I really wanted to like these diapers
Sadly we were unable to really use these diapers as they are so rough. I can really believe that this is 100% a natural diaper because it feels like it has a lot of fiber. :) I really wanted to like this diaper but for a little baby especially a new born the diaper is too rough for their sensitive skin. I couldn't imagine wearing something like this on myself, so I cannot bring myself to put my baby into it.I am sure it is really hard to make a 100% biodegradable diaper that would have a fake cotton feel as some less natural diapers do. Still though I will have to turn to some chemical proceed diaper that can soften the material for now.Thumbs up to the company for trying, I hope they can come up with an improved version of this.

Stiff, and legs didnt fit well...
I really wanted to like these, being one of the more environmentally sensitive diapers out there. However, have had some fit problems and quality issues. There is very limited stretch & contraction to the leg/groin area. At times they really sagged on my daughter with a noticeable looseness to the fit. So much so that we would have had leakage issues if she hadnt been one of those toddlers that tells you immediately she has gone and needs to be changed. The padding is also a little more stiff .. I've found this typical when comparing "eco" diapers in general to more typical brands like Huggies or Pampers. Comparing to Seventh Generation, Nurtured by Nature, and Natybaby I've found these similar to them but maybe just a little more stiff. Has been a while since I used Bumbo or Earth's Best so I cant compare those accurately right now. There is no stretch to the side tabs, I know this is a deal breaker for some parents. All in all, I just didnt find these to be good enough to justify the higher cost compared to my preferred brand.

and smell - especially if you attempt to use them like a Huggies
There's no question concerning these diapers performance compared to the ubiquitous gel-lined, dyed and fragrance-coated varieties (including many that claim to be more sustainable in some way): they don't compare. Broody Chick diapers can leak, blow out, and smell - especially if you attempt to use them like a Huggies! However, if you are looking for something you can feel absolutely safe about putting against your baby's most delicate parts and then bury in your backyard afterwards, these are for you! We use primarily cloth diapers and supplement with Broody Chick. Paired with a good zinc based diaper cream, they've knocked back quite a few diaper rashes over 8-12 hours. They do effectively wick moisture away from baby's skin, just not super natural quantities. They're also great for traveling.
