Still the best network media player
Still the best media player on the market, for me key points are:1) Media can be accesses via NFS mounts (configure once and forget).2) SMB for those that really have to.3) From experience (which includes Sony media players, SumVision etc) this player has the best coverage/success rate with different media formats (although I mainly use MKV/MP4/AVI).4) 3D at 1080p (side-by-side and top-bottom).5) Not found a sound format it does not handle (PCM, DTS etc)6) Takes a normal hard drive for local media if required.Few things to note:1) Looks like they are putting most effort now into their 4K player (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dune-HD-Solo-4K-Mediaplayer/dp/B01CPNRFXO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477470559&sr=8-1&keywords=dune+4k) - last firmware update for the Dune was over a year ago. 4K is about £80 more - but has the same features++ so worth a look at least.2) Sometimes SMB file delete (from popup menu) hangs the whole player (which means turn-it-off-and-on-again to fix).

Excellent Media Player But Lacking In VOD Support
The Dune Base3D is my first venture into home media player territory so apologies if my review doesn't cover some of the points the more dedicated home media consumer may be interested in!First thing to cover, what exactly does this box do? I've only had it for just over a week so far but what this does do is allow me to plug in USB sticks or smart cards loaded with movies and play them through my TV in it's most basic form but that's just the tip of the iceberg. As well as the USB and smart card readers you also have a front bay where you can simply plug in a Hard Drive such as those found in any PC. Plugging it in is ridiculously simple, there's no wires or connections you just open the cover and push it in just as you would with a VHS or DVD so you can then load the HD up with movies which are available at the touch of a button. If you have a movie collection on your PC then that's not a problem, just connect the Dune player to your wifi and you can stream directly from the PC to the Dune and the same can also be done if you have a NAS server. I've had no juddering or buffering issues doing this in full 1080P HD but i've not tried streaming a 3D movie yetSo far it has played every format of file i've thrown at it with no codec issues(avi, mkv, mp4, etc)but I haven't tried some of the more obscure ones. The unit itself is a sleek but basic looking black box the size of your common or garden DVD player. It has the aforementioned HDD bay on the fornt behind a pop up panel along with a USB and smart card dock and eject, skip, play, stop buttons.Round the back are you've got an ethernet port, 2 mores USB docks as well as an HDMI and some component and composite docks and you get a rather comprehensive remote thrown in.The UI is simple enough withg big clear icons to scroll through and it has a few apps pre-installed and a basic internet browser.Where the Dune does fall down though is on two fronts. First of all, the manual that comes with and the support pages on the Dune web site are woefully inadequate. if you're new to media players then chances are you'll spend most of your time searching internet forums to find out how to do things.Secondly, it doesn't support a lot of streaming services which most people would be interested in such as Netflix, iPlayer etc. Firmware updates are few and far between so I doubt we'll see these added any time soon.Another key plus for me is that you can install zappiti on it to help organise your mediaOverall, if you've got a big collection of movies on your PC and want a media centre that can play any format then you can't go wrong here, especially with it's excellent 3D support, but if you're simply looking for something to plug into your TV and play Netflix or Lovefilm through then this isn't for you and I can't help but feel Dune have shot themselves in the foot by not supporting these features.

Could be improved ...
Bought the Dune to organise my growing collection of external HDD's dedicated to movies. Opted to use Zappiti software to use as a jukebox and I needed help to get this set up [thanks to everyone on the forum for their patience] once done that part was okay.Regrettably, my USB 3.0 3TB drives could not be read - which was a setback. So opted to use 2 x 2TB externals instead and a 2TB internal HDD. The slight noise from the internal fan was irritating when the internal HDD was used but only on quiet movie passages [and perhaps I am a little too sensitive to extraneous noise anyway!] But the big failures, in my opinion, were:a] the juddering playback on many of my movies. This apparently needed a firmware fix from Dune to rectify and according to members of the forum had been resolved in a 'Zappiti' badged version of the player, but not in this 'flagship' model from Dune. The last firmware update was some 8 months ago;b] many of my films will not play properly because the 'wrong type' of codec had been used. All my films play perfectly well through other hardware eg [my Oppo BluRay player] and having returned the Dune and purchased a Mede8er equivalent I find that all my sources now play perfectly.c] playback of TrueHD and DTS-MA were rather hit and miss affairs. Some played, others displayed 'this player cannot playback this type of movie] very annoying when you've just settled down to watch something specific. It all rather leads to: what am I doing wrong? type questions. So in summary, it was frustrating that the Dune didn't fully deliver for me. When it did play my films faultlessly it was great and the Zappiti software to create a jukebox wall was rather good. It also has a display [the Mede8er doesn't] and looks better on a hi-fi rack because it looks just like hi-fi equipment and has all the connections neatly at the rear. After returning the Dune, I have read that a new firmware release was made available by Dune. This has been received with mixed reviews by forum members. Some issues were resolved, other new ones [that were not present on previous firmware releases] have been re-introduced. Whether any of my 'problems' were fixed I am unable to say. At least buying from Amazon gives the purchaser the added bonus of returning the product if it fails to meet requirements.

Buen reproductor multimedia
