Best Invention since the VCR
It is not often I get excited by technology. For me, it has to be a game-changer, not just a few new features or an upgrade, like from DVD to Blu-Ray. The VCR was one thing I was excited about. The ability to watch what I wanted, when I wanted was VERY exciting! Now, the NBox has done it for me. I stumbled across it and I couldn't believe this was available. A nice little box that connects to your TV and plays video files directly from a portable hard drive! WOW! I bought this and hooked it up to my 2TB hard drive, which I filled with my DVD collection. Well, not FILLED. More like STARTED to fill! I have 200 movies on this, and I can probably add about 2,000 more. All available at the click of the remote control. No more messing with DVD's and cases. No more having to put all of them away once a week. No more clutter! This thing works VERY WELL, and it plays all sorts of files. MY AVI rips, Flash files, I can even view text files from my USB flash drive which can come in handy. And music. It seems to do everything. Some have said it is difficult to use the remote, that it requires pinpoint accuracy to work. This is not true. You DO have to point it in the general direction of the box, but this has not been a problem for me. I have all of my video encoded at 720p, and it does not skip or stall. And it looks GREAT, even on my 73" Mitsubishi DLP TV. I have had this for about 2 weeks now, and have had no problems whatsoever.I'm not one to download files, but for those that do, this would be the holy grail. No more burning DVD's or CD's. And, it is very simple to use and set up. VERY INTUITIVE! If you can use a DVD player, you can use this just as easily. The price is incredible - the top of the line model costs just $59, about what you would pay for 3 or 4 DVD's. This is a HUGE VALUE and I consider it as revolutionary as the Netflix Roku Box. It is just that good! Every time a friend sees mine, they want one too.

So Far, not impressive
I just received the Nbox V3 today and was very excited to hook it up. It was very easy out of the box, HDMI cable (Not included), and power cable (Included obviously). Piece of cake. I did not receive the USB cable mentioned in some reviews that powers 2.5inch external HDs, but the 2 HDs I had worked with their original cables. I have the Seagate FreeAgent Go 1TB, and the Western Digital My Passport 1TB drives.I first tried the Western Digital My Passport, plugged in and put on my 1080p Batman (1989) original version and played about 5 minutes of it. No problems. The file format is MKV and the file size was about 13.7GB. I have my system hooked up on a 7.1 surround sound with DTS Yamaha receiver and Onkyo speakers, but for some reason the audio on the file was only using 5.1. Weird, maybe it doesn't support 7.1? I have to keep playing with it, but even at 5.1 it's ok. BTW, I know the 7.1 works with the file because before I got this system I have been playing my MKV videos with my Alienware laptop hooked up with HDMI, and ran with VLC player. It was a good format but I couldn't use my laptop while watching anything so I had to get something else. Anyhow, I decided to try a different movie. This time also a MKV format movie, but in 720p format, Source Code, file size 4.37GB. This time it wouldn't start the file at all, it recognized it as a video file but it stayed on the load screen for about 3 minutes before I stopped it. Funny thing is once I had hit the home button to go back to the main screen, the NBox would no longer recognize my Western Digital drive. Again, weird. So what I did was unplug the drive and plugged it back in, where it started to work again. Now thinking this was a one time error, I tried the movie again, and of course, same problem. Ok I said to myself, this has got to be my drive or a corrupt file. I went to my server and copied the movie Source Code to my FreeAgent 1TB drive and tried it with that drive. Same thing, doesn't run the movie, but after I hit home, the NBox still recognized the drive so I didn't have to unplug and replug it back in. Don't know the reason for that, but for that reason alone I will probably be using my Seagate FreeAgent drive mainly with the NBox if I decide to keep it.So what I did next was plug my WD Passport to my Dell Vostro 220s home computer to see if there was a problem with the file or drive, and using VLC player, the file played perfectly fine on my home computer. Repeated the steps with the FreeAgent Go drive and it played perfectly fine also on my home computer using VLC.OK, I thought to myself, maybe the NBox doesn't play 720p videos? So I copied over Cedar Rapids at 720p 4.37GB size to my Seagate FreeAgent Go drive and tried that file. Played just fine. Wow, again weird. So now I'm thinking ok, maybe there is something wrong with the movie file Source Code, so I just copied randomly a few more movies over to the FreeAgent drive. Conan the Barbarian 1080p 8.74GB, Fast & Furious 720p 6.54GB, Rio 1080p 6.54GB, Limitless 720p 4.37GB.Ok so after trying all the videos, Limitless and Rio did not work, same problem as Source Code, just kept in loading page for a long time before I stopped it. But Conan the Barbarian and Fast & Furious worked just fine.I am really confused as to what the problem is. All my files are the same MKV file format, all were encoded the same way. Only difference is the 720p or 1080p format, but the NBox has shown to play 1080p and 720p as it played the Original Batman and Fast and Furious, yet it didn't play Rio and Source Code. So it can't be the resolution. I'm going to copy over some more movies to the FreeAgent Drive tonight and see how many files the NBox will play and not play, if it's more that 25% fail rate on the movies, this little thing is going back. But before I started copying movies over, just for $h!ts and giggles, I played a few AVI files and they worked fine. P90X in AVI, and You've Got Mail in AVI both worked flawlessly. So for the price, this thing is pretty cheap at $60, but if it doesn't play 50% of my MKV files, then it makes no sense to keep it for me. Also, I went online to see if there was a firmware update, but on their website at [...] it specifically says there is no firmware update so the few reviewers that said they got it, I would like to see where they got it from.

Not what you think!!!
This product is very cool, when it works!!I'm sorry to write this kind of reviews, but it's not intended to do harm to the company that makes it, it just does not work sometimes.I own two external hard drives, a 3 TB and a 320 GB, the NBox somehow does not read the 3TB Hard Drive, so I use the 320 GB hard drive, and have to be transfering my movies from one hard drive to another. The other part of the story is that I have to connect several times this hard drive for the NBox to read it, and sometimes I don't have the patience to connect and disconnect my hard drive 6 or more times... NBox company wont be responsible if this kind of behavior damage my hard drive. So, now I barely use it.I believe that the NBox does not have the capacity to read a big amount of data from a hard drive. And that sucks and it's very frustrating!!!When it works, the image and the sound are amazing when connected HDMI, haven't try to connect with the RCA plugs. The playback is great, the OS works fine.I wish it could have WiFi connection to internet, and a better case because it seems to be simple and kind of fragile.
