Thumbs up from 10 year old.
My 10 year old son devoured the book, for anyone that loves fossils this seems to be a great read. My son is an avid reader so maybe not all children would be as inspired, but it can be accessible for that age range if the interest is there.

Good Source of Information about Ammonites and Their Evolutionary History
This is a quite well written and interesting book for people who want to learn more about ammonites. It is written at a level appropriate for the intelligent layperson yet includes a good deal of specific scientific information. I am very pleased with this book and am enjoying it.

Excellent Overview
This short book provides an excellent overview of ammonite evolution, interpreted biologic framework and many diverse photographs. It describes in simple, clear text the what, why and how of these wonderful (now mostly extinct) animals. A great single text to add to your ancient life bookshelf.

Interesting but could be better
The book has superb photographs, both black and white and color. The extended discussion of the attempts to establish what ammonite biology might have been like by comparing them with living and dead realative was fascinating. On the negative side, I missed any discussion of the human context of ammonites. When were they first noticed? What was the process of ascertaining what they really were? As a non-specialist, I could have done with less information on the history and details of various species.Overall, while worth reading, this book suffers in comparison with Richart Fortley's book Trilobite.

Beginner to Expert Informational
This is a MUST read, particularly, for the lay person gaining interest in this extinct animal. There is little to be confused about from this book which runs a wonderful natural history of the cephalopod from anatomy to collecting. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I love this book
I love this book. I am an artist working in primary schools on geology projects. I have to excite kids in the form and function of animals. I love the way the authors connect early biology with modern engineering, perfect for kids to understand how these amazing animals moved about. The book is well illustrated and written in such a way that non-science brains can understand it, (though it still takes a lot of concentration!). Thanks.

Ammonites
Bon livre pour l'histoire évolutive, la biologie, l'écologie et l'histoire de la science mais ne traite en aucun cas les familles d'ammonites ! seulement les super-famille.

Five Stars
An excellent book, clearly written for both amateur and professional collector with great illustrations.

bien... sans plus!
je m'attendais à plus complet et plus illustré même si l'ensemble est bien conçu et clair ... le même ouvrage en français trouverait certainement son public ... vive le "Harraps Shorter"

Biology of Ammonites
This book covers the theories surrounding ammonite biology, so if you're looking for a book detailing the fossilisation of the numerous ammonite species and where to find them you'll probably be disappointed. The book is also aimed at the layman and not academics, so for someone like me who collects fossils as a hobby it's spot on. However, I did find it didn't describe all aspects of ammonite biology. For example, in the section on buoyancy it describes how an ammonite obtained neutral buoyancy but there's no description of how they were able to rise or sink. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, which contains many photographs and diagrams, and I certainly have a much better understanding of these fascinating creatures.
