Cooking With the Saints

A Catholic "Martha Stewart" Cookbook!
This book by Ernst Scheugraf is such a fabulous presentation! The book is large and heavy -- the glossy pages are chock full of mouthwatering recipes with matching colorful photos of the dishes and beautiful graphics of the saints with small biographies of each saint. All the dishes are related to saints--with the criteria that each dish must contain the saint's name. The presentation is just beautiful. The book rivals Martha Stewart's books! All the recipes are written with regular and metric measurements, with easy to follow directions. The recipes range from appetizers to main dishes to dessert -- and all levels of experience can find useful recipes.I study and probably own all the books on the Catholic liturgical year in the domestic church (home) and this book I can really say is unique and worthwhile addition to my collection.

Eating Well Liturgically
For those of us who look for reasons (excuses) to celebrate our lives and our faith this is a perfect book.Great illustrations and recipes .It is missing a calendar however , which I feel is a huge omission ...For those of us who celebrate name's days , this book is wonderful .It has a few blank pages at the back to add wine lists and additional saintly recipes , ( it is missing a couple of my favourite saints ) .

Great gift
I gave this book to my teenage son who loves to cook for a Christmas gift. He loves it and has learned so much!! The recipes are very advanced with many exotic hard to find ingredients. Not a good everyday recipe book.

Not so fast--beautiful but flawed
Yes, this cookbook is beautiful and a welcome addition to growing library of books associated with the Church's liturgical year. BUT the recipes are deeply flawed. It's obvious that the author did not really test the recipes--for example, the sesame/anise bread for St. Joseph's Day calls for 4 cups flour, 6 eggs, 2 cups water, and 1/2 cup of melted shortening. Anyone who knows how to cook would know instantly that you will not end up with a kneadable dough with those quantities but rather a form of library paste. So beware if you try to cook from this book.

Cookbook with an interesting twist
Purchased this as a birthday gift for a friend who just loved it... she is especially fond of St Anthony and lo and behold the book opened to his page and his recipes... she was thrilled... it was well packaged and received in good condition...

Good Fun!
This book is huge fun for those who like to celebrate traditional feasts with traditional recipes. The Saints are listed alphabetically, with details about the individuals, followed by the recipes. These are from many different countries, and although the book is American, ingredients are given in weight as well as volume. The book is well illustrated, with lovely reproductions of paintings of the Saints, and photographs of the food. From my personal point of view the only drawback is that many of the recipes are for meat, so I will not be using those. I would also have prefered the Saints in calendar rather than alphabetical order. If you enjoyed this book, you might also be interested in 'Cattern Cakes & Lace'by Julia Jones. This collection of British traditional recipes for the litergical year is currently out of print, but worth tracking down.
