Dune (2000)

The spice must flow
This is the version you want it is the extended ntsc dvd special edition director's cut with the enhanced (dts and 5.1) audio. It has over 30 minutes of new and extended scenes. Far superior to the regular dvd release. The video is presented in 16:9 for 16:9 widescreen tvs unlike the regular dvd release that has black bars embedded into the video (for 4:3 tvs) making it difficult to watch on a widescreen tv.I do not know why everyone wants to compare the miniseries to the movie, or the miniseries to the book. Can't make anyone happy. Either it is too different or not different enough. Personally I have enjoyed the movie, the miniseries and the book. Can't wait for the new movie direct by Villeneuve and the following tv series.

Held closely to the storyline
The toughest thing about reviewing this miniseries will be the fact that Harrison stuck so close to the book (in composition). Which I do like because I don't like reading a book and have the movie/miniseries totally different. The inside of the palace at Arakeen was beautiful, but didn't improve on the Lynch's movie set in my book. I think that William Hurt did a good job. I feel that he understood how to react as the Regal Duke whosacrifices himself for the good of his family and his royal house. He is somewhat depressed by this (as he shows us) but is also forcedforward by things beyond his control. The head-dresses were beautiful in my opinion. If you are a Dune 'purist' I think you'll like the Harrison miniseries better. If you're a movie buff, the Lynch version will probably standout for you. But I suggest watching it with an open mind and make your own conclusion.

Buyer Beware
I've purchased the original mini series a long time ago, and I was looking to update the collection. The vibe this series DVD has is bootleg. The reason being is, there are no DVD menus, no just to this part of the disc. You put the disc in, and the disc goes to the tittle screen, and there is only (1) option to select to play the disc. The series is 4 hours long, and lets say you get 54 minutes into a disc, good luck getting back to that point.Wait for a legit remaster and re-release of the series.

Very Different from S-W or S-T
I've had this in VHS since release, and just recently got the DVD. I can't count how many times I've viewed it over those years.Very well done TV series and it's gotten many awards to show that. The special thing is how the entire culture revolves around the Spice. Weird things are people fighting with knives, when they have guns to use instead? Another thing that is completely different and fresh is they use the mental power of the Navigators to move unpropelled ships across the galaxy through worm holes. Actually much more plausible than rockets traveling faster than light.Definitely has a 1960s vintage show by the obsession with mental powers enhanced by ingesting the Spice.

Yessss! Finally the originally televised version
I've had to suffer through grainy, foreign language subtitled, youtube versions of this series for years. Almost imported a copy from Germany! (Why was this so hard to access for so long). Now that it's available, I'll let you read other reviews for an actual critique of the series itself, and just say; this Dune (book) fan is so happy to finally be able to watch this hypnotizingly relaxing and yet action infused, 90s graphics filled, CLEAR, no subtitle version from start to finish at long last! Buying more copies before they disappear again like a Disney movie.

Go stream the 70’s version
It is so bad. Why would you remake a movie just to make it less like the book, with worse special effects, and absolutely horrible costuming? Those fabrics are from a high school theater prop closet. I got my rain soaked package off the porch, let it dry out in the tub enough to open without ripping, popped it in. After about twenty painful minutes we turned it off and paid to stream the 70’s version of Dune. This version was like someone skimming the cliff notes for characters, then searching for popular quotes on the internet and assigning them to all the wrong people. I can’t understand why they made all the personalities different, and more shallow. If you remake a film, at least try to make it better.

It's a...show.
The acting is college cinema level. There's more flattened affect that a bunch of napping babies. The costumes and sets scream community theater. Musc flows in and out, somewhere between a sick attempt at Vangelis, uninspired symphonic "marches" for the major characters or events, interspersed with an occasional wind noise or boot click. Anything unusual must have come from the "10,000 Sound Effect" CD.The director obviously had a specific vision, but astigmatism must have warmed it just a tade.

The best try at Dune
The books cover too much for any movie or 3 part miniseries, someone is always going to be disappointed. This is a gorgeous encamera production, as little Cgi as possible. Lighting to die for. William, Alex, her hotnesses Saskia and Barbora and her evilness BG queen and the Baron et al. Her Irulaness...the characters come alive, the cgi is par for a Scyfy production (think SG1). It's real, gritty, takes you there. Oh and the British ambassador daughter who plays young Alia steals the show. I bought this before the pandemic so a star off for the price gouging. This is worth 25USD. Avoid the Sting version, it tried to do too much in one movie. Children of Dune is worthy followup, unfortunate that Saskia was unavailable for the sequal. Alice was good, just missed something Saskia brought to the table. Wait for a used to pop up.

An enjoyable adaptation
not as gorgeous to look at as Lynch's but damn good as a "made for TV"Much more coherent storytelling.

Not as good as Lynch.
Very disappointed with this version. As a big fan of the books I had wanted to see it for such a long time but it was a real let down. Worth a watch but not what it should have been and the painted desert backdrops were awful.

Closer to the book than the 80s movie!
Finally proved to my wife that this mini-series exists! Not as many big stars as the movie (I do miss Sir Patrick Stewart as Gurndy), but this series follows the book more closely! Great show!
