Call of the Loon

The text and photos in this book are excellent, so I highly recommend the book. BUT the accompanying DVD "Loons, Lakes & Mist", which I was very much looking forward to, was a big disappointment. Yes, the live loon webcam captures the loons in special situations. However the constant, loud, pounding, music is all wrong as background for any film about loons. You want quiet, so you can hear the call of the loon. You can turn off the sound, which I suggest you do, but then there is no call of the loon.

We live on a lake and one of our favorite things is watching the loons, noticing them nesting, seeing the babies grow and how both parents take turns caring and feeding their young. I had the opportunity to meet the author and found him to be very knowledgeable. The book and CD will be keepsakes at our house it is well documented.

I was disappointed that it was not the book I had thought I had ordered.I was seeking the large coffee table book with a lot of text too, but got a small,.. almost childrens book.Maybe I should have looked into it further.Maybe it was deceptive, I don't know.I gave it as a gift to my grand daughter.

Received the book "Call of the Loon". But there is no DVD! Empty pocket on back cover. So this is incomplete. I took a chance.

Excellent! The book has lots of interesting information about this amazing bird, the Loon. The pictures are a true work of art, patience, and professional dedication to scientific research. Once I started to read, I couldn't stop until the end and watching the DVD was an enjoyable bonus. It met and exceeded my expectations - it was worth my time!

I bought this book because we have a copy, and wanted to give a copy to a friend who had never heard of Loons.Yes, we like the book well enough to want to give a copy away (BUT NOT OUR COPY!)

A complete waste of time. I bought this book and DVD in Mackinaw having been rustic and wild camping on various lakes in the Upper Peninsula and having heard the wonderful calls of loons echoing across these lakes and expecting to hear them on the DVD.WHICH IDIOT PUT PLINKY PLONKY POOR GUITAR MUSIC ON THE DVD, TOTALLY DROWNING OUT THE MOST EVOCATIVE BIRD SOUND I HAVE EVER HEARD IN ALL MY TRAVELS ACROSS THE WORLD?WHOEVER MADE THIS DECISION, YOU SEEM TO HAVE TOTALLY MISSED THE POINT !I would give this a minus star rating if I could !Certainly only 1 complete disappointment

Bought this book and the pictures are fine but we wanted the book for the DVD with loon calls. Why someone is compelled to add insipid and loud music to nature pictures is beyond me. There were a few warbles mixed into the music but essentially it was all new age music that didn't fit the pictures. Don't buy this if you were hoping that the DVD was the main feature.
