The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia (Kingfisher Encyclopedias)

Great Resource
We are using this book this school year as a supplement to Story of the World. The Story of the World activity book contains page refrences for each chapter in this book. My middle schoolers use this book to write outlines and add important dates and people to their timeline for the year. The pages are glossy and packed full of information. There are lots of neat pictures and each spread contains a small box of the important dates outlined. It is a very good history resource, especially for families using The Well Trained Mind to educate their kids.

The illustrations are excellent, appropriate
Definitely an encyclopedia rather than a textbook. Each page has a timeline at the top so as you skip around the book, you can keep track of what century you are reading about. The illustrations are excellent, appropriate, and there are plenty of them on each page to keep the book interesting to read as well as flip through. It's written on a 3rd grade reading level, but comprehension is more like 6th grade and up. As a homeschool mom, I love this as a resource in our library of books.

Great history text supplement
This is a great supplement to my 7th grade world history text. I read the textbook first, then read the corresponding information in the Kingfisher Encyclopedia, which adds extra depth to the textbook information and provides a visual context. It's a nice, heavy book with glossy pages and really good photos and illustrations. I plan to sell most of my curriculum books at the end of this school year, but I think I'll hang on to this book! It also makes an interesting "coffee table" book.

Great for looking up historical events
My son is 8 years old. I bought it for him as a general reference on history. It is great for giving a short and interesting narrative of events. The language is quite advanced for my son so it is best to be available to assist them at his age. The nice thing is that when he is reading a book and it makes a historical reference, he can look it up and get a good understand of what the book is talking about.

Contains lots of information, but... “colored?”
This encyclopedia is very nice and is very useful for homeschooling, however, I was torn as to whether to keep it. I haven’t gone through the whole book, but just flipped through the book. While flipping through it, under the section “Civil Rights 1950 - Present” (p. 447), “In the South African city of Johannesburg in the 1980s, many black and colored people were moved into slums and shantytown...” Now, I don’t know enough about South Africa to know if “colored” is an acceptable term there, but given how many white people I and other people have encountered or heard about lately, who have used “colored” to refer to black people in the United States, I would like it to be known for anyone in doubt that “colored” is not an acceptable term to use for black nor any other non-white people within the United States, at least. Please do let your children know this, before they brandish this term around, as many are doing nowadays. “People of color,” is the appropriate description to use and yes, there is a difference between POC and “colored.” “Colored,” was a derogatory term used during segregation to refer to black people specifically. POC refers to non-white people, specifically non-Asian minorities, and also uses “people first” language(e.g., people with disabilities vs disabled person). Anyway, I gave the authors the benefit of the doubt that “colored” might not be as offensive in South Africa (still need to do more research), and kept it. But for y’all from American, strike that word from your vocabulary, permanently.

Very Nice History Encyclopedia for Children
Very nice content and illustrations. I anticipate all of our children using this as a solid reference for their history lessons. I only wish there was a library binded version with cover for protecting dust jacket. I will need to improvise my own so it holds up to wear and tear.

Wonderful pictorial history book.
A terrific book with interesting information and great illustrations. My six year old granddaughter loves history and she spends time just slowly looking at each of the pictures before asking someone to read to her from this very large book.
