Does it have to be over?
(Some spoilerish sentences ahead)I already miss Ceony and Emery. I love the third installment of their story, I'm so glad we got one more. I loved the love notes, wish their could have been more but I'm grateful for what we got, loved their cute little moments together. I love how adorably naïve (and she did have other worries on her mind at the time) she was about why Emery would meet with her father, and how he just went along with it. I thought Charlie was incredibly clever in how she included all the different types of magic in this last book, how Ceony was utilizing what she learned. I loved the times Ceony was able to put Bailey in his place.I will always wish for more romance in any book I read, but I did enjoy, and appreciate, what we got in this book. Charlie has made a forever fan out of me, I truly love her writing and the ability she has to weave a story so beautifully.

Conclusion to a Uniquely Magical Series
As sad as I was to say goodbye to Emery, one of my all-time favorite characters, I was happy to see he and Ceony finally get their happy ending in the conclusion to this fun, unique series.Even though this book didn't have as much action as the first two and was not the strongest book in the trilogy, the growing relationship between Ceony and Emery was fun to read about, and I was looking forward to Ceony's final test and graduation. I did get frustrated again with Ceony's decision-making (she went looking for trouble, so she found it), and I felt the main plot about Saraj started kind of late in the book, but I still enjoyed the book because I was invested in these characters and what was going to happen to them.Overall, it was a series I enjoyed and am glad I read. Emery is a fantastic character who will forever be one of my absolute favorites (in case you couldn't tell from the 27 other times I've already talked about him), the magic was creative and different from other forms I've read about, and the story was sweet with an equally cute conclusion.*I've read this book multiple times. This review was written after my 1st read.*2nd Read Update:Even though I've increased my rating by a whole star this time, I feel like my review from my first read is still valid. I think I was just more in a "go with the flow" mindset this time, so I wasn't bothered by the same things. Ceony did make bad decisions seemingly for the sake of plot again, but it was at least in-character, and, again, who am I to really say what someone might do, especially if they're worried about loved ones? I definitely loved all the magic. The author came up with such an interesting system, and such interesting spells and uses for each material, and it was all just a lot of fun to read about. I loved Ceony's necklace idea too. And of course I loved Emery and their cute relationship. Overall a great series with really cool magic, an eccentric love interest I adored, and a happy ending!*Rating: 3 Stars // 1st Read Date: 2015 // Format: eBook**Rating: 4 Stars // 2nd Read Date: 2020 // Format: eBook*Original Review @ Metaphors and Moonlight (link in profile)

Wonderful Series
I really enjoyed this entire series. The magical world was so interesting and well developed, the characters were genuine and likeable, and I really liked the plot. This third entry really made up for the lack of mention of the death of a character in the second. I feel like this third book we were able to grieve for them more and see how it affected our main characters. I also enjoyed seeing other paper magicians even if they can't hold a torch to Emery Thane! This author is an absolute wizard in making these beautiful, magical stories. They are gripping, touching, funny, adventurous, and romantic. Perfect. Definitely pick this series up - so worth it! And when you're done go read the Whimbrel House series by this author too!!

Mixed feelings
Charlie is so good at writing and comes up with some really clever stuff. Her books are generally compelling for that reason.I felt like this one was frustrating to read for me though, I think mostly because thr main character goes looking for trouble without enough cause to feel like it is anything but foolish. Her motives and worries don't seem big enough to condone her actions, and then because she was meddling unnecessarily she has murderers coming after her and her family.I also felt bothered by Emory and Ceony's relationship Emory acts more like an over protective big brother then like a romantic companion and Ceony acts just like a bratty little sister who is determined to get herself into trouble.I felt annoyed by her for a good bit of the book though the end was better. Finally Ceony and Emory worked together for once. And some of the things I felt that Ceony was getting away with that were not okay were resolved. Though I do think she hasn't really truly learned, she mostly got lucky and had a slap on the wrist for her misbehavior and would likely go right back at it even though she is excessively careless about everything and everyone in her life.

charming
If I had one wish, it would be the read this trilogy for the first time over and over. From the very first book I was hooked and instantly fell in love with Ceony and Emerys journey of personal development, individuality, and as a couple.Aside from the magic aspect which I found fascinating and a joy to read, I was completely invested in the “love story” aspect. The ongoing battle with the excisioners kept the story exciting and edgy. There were moments I really didn’t know if Ceony or Emery wouldMake it! But the ending was perfect and the only thing I’m disappointed about is not having a 4th book to further develop their relationship and perhaps, what happens next (as magicians). Please do a 4th book!!! We need more C&E content - a wedding? Maybe a 5years later?

Enjoyable , easy read
The characters have continued to develop over the set of books. The story remains uncomplicated and an enjoyable read. There is also a pull in the story line that keeps you turning pages to see how it will all end up. Well worth reading not only this book but the previous ones in the series too.

Good read
Blog: irenadams.comCaution, mild spoilers ahead.''Decide where you want your life to go before you set it rolling.''As with The Glass Magician, I didn’t even have half-a-day between finishing one book and starting the other. And I was disappointed. From the first pages I felt less enthralled. The story was not as attractive to me. From the synopsis I had read before starting it, I hoped for me. Ceony seemed rather stupid in this book and Emery mostly absent.I would rather understand a bad second book and a good third one. That’s usually the case when there is a trilogy. The transition tends to worsen in the middle of the series and pick up again in the ending. This series did the opposite. That is not to say I didn’t like the ending. One of the things that is most important to me in a series is how the author will finish it. I love open endings, even though they leave me with an aching heart and I love the happy endings, even though not everyone gets one. And Charlie N. Holmberg found that perfect balance for a good one.I just hoped for more of Ceony and Emery during the book and I found their relationship absent during all of it. The romance that made me smile and hope during The Glass Magician, was no longer there.New characters appeared. The encounter with Pritt, the boy and now the man who hated Emery for his bullying and I guess other differences, was welcome. I absolutely loved that he was there because I wondered about his life as a magician from the moment he was mentioned in the first book, but he wasn’t developed until the last book. Bannet, another student from her past also was there to make for a richer world. But the characters were shallow and with no backstory. The tension I felt during the first two installments were absent from this book. Ceony did things not to protect someone or in a sense of urgency, but because… Well, I don’t think I can answer that. I found her boring, annoying and not easy to relate to.Even though that the enemy is even more evil than Grath, the antagonist from the second installment of the series, the only conflict that seemed to flow through the book was ‘Will Ceony and Emery finally be together or not?’The book was addictive, showing excellent writing that Charlie N. Holmberg is good at, but at the same time frustrating as nothing of interest was happening and no tension was present. This was a good read for the most part of it. It gave a nice final touch to the series even if not the best one.
