Had to buy ALL three to find the one that fits
I needed this because I live in a house built in 1972, so the shower supply pipe has a ball head on the end. The only other choice is to have the shower supply pipe replace by a plumber. I found it extremely difficult, even with good plumbers tape, to get the attachment on tight enough that it was not spraying water literally all over the bathroom. Glad to say that I finally got the connections tight enough and it has worked well. The only real downside is that unless it has water running through it, the shower head droops and has to be lifted manually for showering.

Adopts an old outdated Gerber rounded shower head pipe to the threaded pipe for modern shower heads.
Easy to install.

Easy way to replace the showerhead without replacing the arm
My wife was on my case to replace the showerhead but I was afraid that the pipe arm would break off inside the wall. This allowed me to change the head without replacing the arm pipe. Win-win.

Did not fit, not worth returning.
I purchased this adapter for my shower head, and it did not fit. Bad on me for not knowing better and measuring and double checking sizes. However, cost of shipping it back would have meant I would get back $.50 or something, so not worth it, just ate the cost of the product. Fortunately, I realized I could just replace the entire arm that sticks out of the wall (Thanks, OSH!) rather than using the ball joint, and the problem has been solved.

It fit and worked!
My husband and I bought an older house and we came upon a shower with a ball shower arm. Normally we have only come across the ones with twist rings...Anyways we tried to figure it out. I even called my father since he is very knowledgeable. He had never seen that kind of shower arm ever in his life. Anyways we eventually found out it needed a special adapter to use other kinds of shower heads and then got referred to this adapter from the YouTube video we came across with the info. It came in the mail pretty quickly and it isn’t a bad price at all. Also it fit our Gerber ball joint shower arm easily and we haven’t had any problems with it. I’d just make sure it is a Gerber ball shower arm before buying cause what I have learned there are 3 types of ball shower arms. If you are unsure and the shower head doesn’t say. There is a pack with the three different kinds of adapters so you can try each and figure out which works for yours. That link is below. Hope it works for you. Third time is a charm, and Whedon is decent quality
At long last, the third try with these products was a charm. So, since I have all three, let me save someone the time of ordering the wrong type thrice. I didn't have the luxury of a name anywhere on the piping or the previous shower head. However, Gerber showerheads will stand out as the biggest. Measure the diameter of the ball-joint. If the joint is around 1 1/8 inch, it is probably a Gerber, the other two connectors that I have are almost a 1/4 of an inch smaller. If it's smaller, it is an American Standard or Pfister. These are very close to the same size, but the Pfister threads are short and tight. The American standard threads are spaced wider and deeper, about 1/10 of an inch spaced and about 1/12 of an inch deep. Pfister threads are barely 1/32 tall and a little bit larger than that for depth. All sizes are approximate, but it should be pretty clear which fits which.

Finally!
Before you buy one of these, make sure that you figure out the brand of plumbing. It was really hard for me to do that because the rest of the fixtures (the bath part) had been replaced with American Standard at some point, but the shower head had not. So, I ordered the wrong one at first. Of course, it didn't fit, and I didn't want to take the chance at buying another wrong one online, so I took the existing original showerhead around to several big and small hardware stores and NONE had what I needed. Then someone, in one of the reviews for one of these (sorry, I forgot to tag just one --- search for 'whedon ball joint shower arm adapter' without any brand) put in the measurements. So, I ordered this one. And, it's perfect. And, I can finally use a hand-held showerhead. I am a happy girl.

Don't waste your money
Like many other customers complaining here, the shipping was more money than the actual part ordered. What people don't know, nor does Amazon advertise, is the fact that there are many similar looking shower head adapters. There are no sizes or dimensions provided, just silly names like Price Phister, Delta, etc, which most consumers have no idea exactly what they have. Save your money folks!
