Daido Moriyama: Record

High contrast, gritty, intense
This is not like Henri Cartier-Bresson's work nor is it like the imagery created by other visionaries like Peter Turnley or Constantine Manos. This is something totally different.Moriama's imagery in this collection is at once high contrast, gritty, intense and visually chaotic - but in a good way. His images leap out and grab you by the throat, laying bare the intensity of the city environments in which he harvests his images.Highly recommended.

Maximum Impact, Maximum Contrast
A beautifully made book, inside a slipcase. This is how books should be. The images are big, bold and powerful, as you would expect from Moriyama. Everything is about maximum with his pictures - maximum black, maximum white and maximum impact. These are all drawn from past issues of his series of photo books called Record and each section is accompanied by his own notes and thoughts about them. He famously shoots everything, every day, as a kind of visual diary. There is no particular focus in his work, inasmuch as there is no theme or story, it's all about capturing anything that catches his eye that will illustrate a particular period of time or a place he visits. He prints in a trademark high contrast style and then presents them mostly as full-bleed pictures across the pages of his magazine - something he took from William Klein's work, who also insists on full-bleed image presentation. That's the single issue with this book. Many of the images are difficult to see in their entirety because of the fold but it's a small price to pay for such a superb book. There are colour pictures mixed in with the black and white work which give a better overall view of his work, although the colour work pales against the sheer power of the black and white work. While it's true that not all of his images could be described as great pictures by themselves, that's not the point. His scrupulous editing and presentation is what makes him one of the great Japanese photographers. Buy it and be astonished.

My favourite photography book
This book is incredible. I own many books by different photographers and this is my favourite by far. There are so many pictures and they are all outstanding. Quality of the book and printing is second to none in my opinion. So, if you like Daido Moriyama’s work, this book is a must have.
