Chicory Root Roasted Granules - 1 Lb

Bought this for my BFF as a Christmas present. She often makes trips to New Orleans and has mentioned several times how much she likes the coffee there because many places serve it with Chicory in it. I wanted to get her some but didn't have a clue what to get. The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to get something that she could add to her own choice of coffee, not coffee that already had chicory in it, that way she could control the amount she added to her brew. After some research and reading tons of reviews on many products, I decided on this one and it did NOT disappoint!! According to my BFF this was very much like what she was used to in New Orleans. There's plenty in the bag and even after almost 2 months (she got it early) there's plenty left. The packaging is a foil/mylar, resealable bag to maintain freshness, that was a big + according to her, she thought about getting another canister with a good rubber seal but she said the pouch it came in seals so well that she didn't need to. The product inside the package when it was first opened was very fresh and has retained that freshness so far. As for the taste, according to her it is very nice and pleasant, although, not as "toasty" as some others that she has had. I assume she was referring to the flavor from the roasting of the chicory, this could be due to the coffee she was mixing it with, but she likes it very much and it was a hit. So all in all, great taste, although not as "toasty" as some others. Reminiscent of New Orleans coffee house coffee. Great resealable, flavor preserving packaging to maintain freshness. I know some people drink just chicory as a substitute for coffee rather than adding a small amount to coffee so depending on which way you use this and how much you drink, it could last you a long time. I personally can't vouch for the flavor, but I know she's drinking it so it can't be all that bad ;)

I purchased this after seeing a recipe post for chicory "coffee". I've been drinking a lot of coffee lately and wanted to back off a bit to reduce the caffeine intake as well as some acid reflux, but really enjoy the flavor of coffee as a treat mid morning at work or on the weekend. I purchased this the same day I saw the post with the recipe. I had it in less than 2 days and made the coffee that night! It was a cold brew - super simple (1/4 cup of the granules, 2 cups cold water, let soak overnight and then pour into a pitcher through a funnel lined with a few paper towels) and I used half of my normal Cold Brew of choice (purchased in the dairy section of my local grocery store by the coffee creamers), half of this chicory "coffee" and my normal almond milk creamer. It had a great flavor. All in all VERY easy to work with, great coffee substitute with low acidity. The bag has plenty and I will be able to continue making the coffee for several months at a batch a week. I was a little apprehensive about the cost and comparing this brand to others. I was very pleased. Fast delivery, great quantity, quality product that did exactly what I was looking for!

I love the smell of freshly brewed coffee and the whole ritual around preparing it and of course drinking it. However, I started feeling instinctually guided to pull back on it. I had roasted dandelion root before ( uber years ago ) and I thought to give this a go and I have not regretted it. I haven't had the desire to have any coffee since this although I've had one cup because someone was treating me to some Starbucks. If you're not into herbs it might take some adjusting to it as it not exactly as coffee and doesn't have the [stimulating] effect that most drinker go for. It has a [earthy] taste to it and I find it very comforting and grounding to drink. I can't imagine ever wanted to buy coffee again as long as I have this as a choice. It's very strong and a little goes a long way. I haven't had any other brands so I'm assuming the quality is good just based off of having a great experience with it and also comparing to having a long history of working with herbs.

This is my second purchase and this bag seems well roasted. The aroma is definitely there and the flavor is spot on. But the grind is still way too coarse. Even if you were using this as a stand alone beverage, I think you would want more of a coffee grind. Maybe the folks who use this boil it, I really don't know. Since I mix this with my favorite coffees I regrind it as needed. So long as the quality and flavor is there it's no big deal for me. Let me add that I really like the quality of this product, that's why I will probably buy it again.

I've been drinking coffee for 35 years, probably longer. Some would say I'm a coffee enthusiast, but I'm definitely not snobby about it so this review is for those who just like simple coffee. Here's my backstory on why chicory then. After buying all the must-haves for the "perfect" cup of coffee I realized I like coffee, not caffeine -- go figure, right! Or rather caffeine no longer liked me, lol. I spent 4 years going between decaf, and coffee alternatives, giving up, going back to caffeinated, rinse and repeat. Coffee alternatives often try to mimic coffee's taste or promote how much it tastes "just like coffee" and in the process charge you for a "healthier alternative". Honestly coffee isn't unhealthy either, but these alternatives just weren't what I was looking for and then lightbulb moment, I remembered chicory has been added to coffee for years and I wondered well what does chicory (which a) is a single-ingredient product and b) cost-efficient) taste like... Answer: No, not like coffee. But definitely not like tea either (no hate to tea!!) and yet still satisfying enough to be the warm beverage I can reach for in the morning to start my day because a hot cuppa in the AM cannot be beaten IMO. So to summarize, chicory has replaced my decaf coffee in the morning. I may play around with making an iced beverage from this one day, but for now, it is a great coffee replacement.

This is NOT coffee, BUT if you drink your coffee with sugar and creamer, then you will be satisfied! It smells great straight out of the bag! I bought this solely as a coffee substitute not an add-in as my husband and I are trying to go a month without caffeine and see how we feel! I missed the comfort of the warm coffee taste in the mornings. I do not drink my coffee black and did not figure that I would enjoy this black either. I had to grind these granules up in my blender and I brewed a single cup using 1 tsp ground chicory and I honestly thought it tasted better than black coffee, but still not particularly "enjoyable".....I then added my usual non dairy creamer and stevia and was blown away by how delicious it was! Gave me just what I needed! I brewed my husband a cup with 1 1/2 tsp chicory because he likes his coffee a bit stronger - he thought it was bitter plain(he drinks his coffee black) but not overall not bad. He added in a smaller amount of creamer and stevia and was also impressed! VERY pleased so far with this product!

Was looking for a chicory root/grind I could use in the mokapot. It does make a strong brew, so you don’t need as much of the roots in the filter of the mokapot, I fill to about halfway.

This was phase two of my experimenting with chicory. I'd gotten a premixed blend of coffee and chicory from a different brand, and found it drinkable, though not actually tasty. I bought these granules to try straight chicory, and different ratios of chicory to coffee. These are roughly the same coarseness to which I grind coffee beans for a French Press. I tried using the granules by themselves, and then experimented with different amounts of them mixed with coffee. I'm not going to become a fan of chicory, it seems. I drink coffee black, but found the straight chicory to be undrinkable that way, I had to mix in some milk and sugar to make it tolerable. I then tried different amounts of coarse ground coffee and these granules. I found that at least four parts of dark roast coffee to one part chicory results in something that I can drink black and without sweeteners, and which does not taste too bad. A ratio of seven to one is even better. Not as good as just coffee, but not bad. I haven't used it all up yet, but every now and then I'll continue to make the mix, as I don't like letting things go to waste. But I won't buy it again. Giving it a respectable three stars anyway, because I don't think there is anything actually wrong with this product. There was no "best by date" on the packaging (unless it was hidden under the paper sticker which was stuck on so tightly that there was no removing it), but the granules seemed to be fresh. I think that it's good quality, it's just a matter of chicory turning out not to be to my taste. If you don't try different things, you don't know if you'll like them or not. Sometimes it doesn't work out, that's all.

I use chicory to add a rich ,mellow taste to my coffee and this product fills the bill. The only downside is the price . Even if you increase the quantity to get free shipping; the cost is over the top. The one pound bag retails for well under $10.00 in California but ends up costing over $20.00 to get it to my door in Winnipeg. My last order for two lbs cost me around $45.00 Let me know if there is a Canadian supplier out there.

It tastes chicory. It mimics coffee, and it is possible to get used to it. Coffee gourmands will find it difficult to switch to chicory from the real rich coffee blend. But... The product is very good.

This is the first time I've tried chicory root tea. I stopped coffee and it's a good alternative. Regular tea just doesn't cut it fro me but the chicory has a deep enough flavour that it satisfies me. I'm almost done my first bag and onto the second one I already ordered.

I didnt love the taste. It tasted like dandelion tea except its suppose to be good for digestion- like probiotics etc.

I use this as a coffee substitute. I don’t understand why it’s more expensive than coffee. It helps me reduce my caffeine intake which I find is helpful. I sleep much better at night with this product
