Yes, it will. Mine is currently supporting 4"x6"43" shelf.

With the bracket against the wall, how does the shelf become flush to the wall?

After you drill the holes, you router out a shallow pocket in the back of the shelf. It’s best that your shelf be 1/2 inch thicker than the height of the backplate so there is room for the pocket.
