The Protector (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

The Most Ridiculous, Serious Kung Fu Movie
I have heard that Tony Jaa wanted to do Kung Fu movies his whole life, but never realized that they used wires for the "flying" stunts. While that story is questionable at best, it makes sense with some of the stunts in this film.Have you ever wanted to see a guy long jump 20 feet to knee a guy in the chest?Have you ever wanted to see a guy kick a guy out of a helicopter, while standing on the ground?Have you ever wanted to see the longest one take, continuous fight scene in movie history (its over 3 minutes)?Have you ever wanted to see a movie featuring a trans woman, playing a trans woman, as a character that is treated no differently because of it?Do you like elephants? (Probably not as much as Ong Bak)Do you wanna see an action movie that also somehow captures a good amount of Thai culture? If you answered "no" to any of those questions, who hurt you? Why don't you like fun?Pros: See list above.Cons: A skippable and gratuitous mud bath scene, if you don't like kung fu movies the pacing and plot will seem silly, you might be the person who said no to any of the above questions

By far the most mind-blowing martial arts film I've ever seen!
Put simply: AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!The action and stunt choreography will have your head spinning, so much that you may forget to notice the top-notch soundtrack and gorgeous cinematography, and the fact that all of the cast members deliver strong performances (a rarity in action films). The Protector is not only a riveting action film, it is also beautiful, with spirituality, humanity and respect for nature at its core. Even those who are not fans of action movies will be amazed at what they're seeing (no wires, no CGI, just pure human talent), and action fans will get such a charge that they may need to be put outside for a few hours afterward.THE DVD EXTRAS ARE PLENTIFUL AND THEY ARE TOP-NOTCH!!! Don't miss them. This is like no martial arts movie you've ever seen. Tony Jaa and Prachya Pinkaew have done the world a favor by bringing the unique, spectacular (and, as often noted, brutal) Mui Thai kickboxing style to the screen. It's not enough to say that the bar has been raised. It's been kicked through the ceiling. If you are a fan of fighting movies, your absolutely cannot miss this one. Your jaw will drop, your eyes will pop out and you will howl with disbelief. Reviewers criticizing this movie for senseless violence need to go soak their heads and check what planet they're on. Of course it's violent!!! It's a marial arts film!!! Were you expecting Ralph Macchio? This is the real deal.I love Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li, but I promise, you've never seen anything like this. Tony Jaa is the future of martial arts cinema.

21st CENTURY STANDARDS ABSENT!
PLOT IS FAIR . . . CINEMATOGRAPHY IS FAIR . . . ACTING IS FAIR . . . DIALOGUE IS REMEDIAL! NEVER THE LESS, I LIKED THISMOVIE!! IT IS FULLY ACTION PACKED FROM BEGINNING TO END. A SUBSTANTIAL MALAYSIAN ARTISTIC EFFORT! THE TWOTHINGS THAT I DIDN'T LIKE ARE RATHER MINOR: 1) THIS MOVIE IS A REMAKE OF A MOVIE THAT I SAW WHILE OVERSEAS IN THEARMY DURING THE 1970's. THE ORIGINAL MOVIE, (I'M SORRY BUT I CAN'T RECALL THE TITLE NOR ACTORS), IN "TECHNICOLOR"NO DOUBT, SEEMED CENTERED IN ASIA, PARTICULARLY THAILAND, AND MAINTAINED A WHOLESOME ASIAN THEMETHROUGHOUT ITS BODY AND CONTENT. THERE WAS NO NEED TO PAN OVER TO SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA AND DISPLAY THESQUALOR, CORRUPTION AND RUTHLESSNESS OF URBAN SOCIETY AND ENTWINE THAT MALAISE WITH A PRISTINE, NAIVE,RURAL THAI VILLAGE. A MAJOR SCREENWRITING FAUX PAS. PATENTLY UNNECESSARY, AND CERTAINLY DEVISED TOAPPEAL TO BOTH GENRES. IF THAT SCREENWRITER WAS IN AMERICA , HE WOULD BE EATING IN THE SOUP LINE!2) THE SCENES SHOT OVER IN SYDNEY AUSTRALIA UTILIZE THE MOST BLAND, BRAND X, C MINUS ACTORS EVER AGGREGATED. THE GRUNTS AND GROANS OF THESE BUFFOONS IS ALMOST HILARIOUS! FOR THIS BOO-BOO EVERYONESHARES SOME BLAME . . . FROM THE PRODUCER ON DOWN TO THE AUSTRALIAN SCREEN ACTORS GUILD! WHAT A SHAME!!IN BRIEF, I HONESTLY FEEL THIS MOVIE IN INDEED WORTH YOUR TIME & POCKET CHANGE. BUT THE 21st CENTURY STANDARDS EVIDENCED BY QUALITY CHINESE, JAPANESE AND VIETNAMESE MOVIEMAKERS ARE ABSENT HERE!

The Dragon Unleashed
The Protector....or most accurately titled "Tom Yum Goong" is a display of the Dragon within Tony Jaa. This movie feels more like a "Bruce Lee" film although he had a "Jackie Chan" look-a-like appear in this movie for a few seconds as a tribute. His first film was about his culture's most revered statue "Ong-Bak". Now we are introduced to a more prominent character...the Elephant. Eventhough Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior featured some Elephants at the end this movie focused heavily on them. Again people complain about the storyline but for this film helped me to have a new appreciation of Elephants and their importance to life. Tony Jaa shows us that he is quite capable of taking things up another notch with is 2nd film effort. This is movie is more "brutal" than Ong-Bak was and presence yet another "Thai" style of fighting. I particularly liked how Tony brought in some other Professional Fighters to present more styles of fight including my one of my favorite..."Capoeria" featured by Lateef Crowder (Wonderful Job)!I won't tell too much on the fight scenes because you need to see them for yourself and marvel but I will say that Tony Jaa's climactic scene featuring him up against 50+ enemies was quite a sight to behold. It was innovative and ambitious and he pulled it off with style! If Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior made you a fan of Tony Jaa then this is continue to fuel that support of his work!Well done Tony aka Panom Yeerum!! Well done!!!

Jaa is back on form.
Next to Ong Bak this is Jaa's best movie. The opening fight is poorly edited, if inventive, and reminds me of the disappointment of so many of his films. However things pick up massively from there on. The direction, stunts, fights and editing of the subsequent scenes are amazing. The staircase fight is a thing of beauty as is the water filled room scene. The finale is a chaotic and brutal scene of broken bones and triumphant glory.PS. Dont watch Protector 2.. its awful in all the ways Protector isn't.

Film Stupendo!
