Neisser's older work (1966) is still worth reading for its historical period. His observations and criticisms of Freud are of value in the current efforts to ressurect the Father of Psychoanalysis. Neisser's emphasis on Freud's interest in ego suppression and censorship verus the brain's meta-organization foreshadowed contemporary criticisms of Freud's failure to adequately address affect and emotion. Neisser says, "We need a conception of the mind which allows for multiple activity at some levels, but also has a place for an executive process (p. 299). Thus, the Freudian deterministic model of ego as an Id emergent is being questioned. Further criticism of the antagonism between primary and secondary processes on Freud's part is also questioned. If the reader wants a clear explanation of what Freud meant by ego suppression and censorship, cathected memories, or Freud's use of ideas, read this book.
