But I found they seemed well sharpened to go right out of the box. **Q: How thick are the blades?** A: They are all slightly different, and they are all tapered, with a thinner thickness near the cutting edge and the thickest part of the blade being near the handle. Roughly, they are 0.2 inches thick near the cutting edge, and 0.25 inches at the handle end of the blade. Not rust-proof but hard, durable, and can be sharpened. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Acceptable quality for cost. *by on Reviewed in the United States August 18, 2026* They have worked for everything I needed to so far. But the rings that prevent the handles from splitting feels cheap. As if they could be a metallic shell over plastic core? Or a really chintzy metal? Not sure but it doesn't feel like it will work better than a few turns of bailing wire will in the long term. Though the handles themselves have plenty of grip space and a good shape that helps find edge alignment. They are maybe more top heavy than is ideal. But not unwieldy. The packaging is rather nice. They come in one of those crimped plastic sleeves with multiple slots and a flap. It rolls up and goes into a bag which fits into a decent reusable cardboard box. Each of the chisels come tipped with a removable edge protector. They came sharp out the box. Didn't even need deburring. I touched them up once and they took well the being honed. But the steel is definitely not as hard as more expensive chisels. So it sharpens easily but has lower edge retention. It's not the best version of what these could be if buying an antique set and/or paying a lot more. But it met my expectations for the price and I don't think one can reasonably expect anything better at this price point. If you're just looking for some learner tools or just have a singular job you need them for and can foresee using them again once or twice a year, then these are perfectly acceptable. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great value *by on Reviewed in the United States August 9, 2024* This is a bit long because I want to add some context The first woodworking chisel I purchased was a Narex Richter extra bevel edge chisel. I only bought the 1/2" size for $46. I wanted to get one before investing in more. I like this chisel very much. It's excellent for many reasons. Then I bought the 4 piece Narex Profi bevel edge chisel set for around $50. This set came with a weird coating that was difficult to get off during the sharpening process. BTW, all chisels need to be sharpened upon arrival if you want to get a super sharp edge for woodworking. The Narex chisels work great after sharpening and seem to hold their edge well.So on to this set. I bought it on a whim. German, only $14, I figured I'd take a flyer. Worse case, I'd have a set of "I don't care" chisels to do more coarse work. The handles are smaller than the Narex chisels. So far, not a problem. I wanted to try a set with smaller handles to determine a preference.Unlike the Narex chisel set (not the Richter), this set did not have a coating on the chisel and the back seemed reasonably flat and the edge decently sharp. A good starting place to begin the flattening and sharpening process. The backs of all the chisels took a while and I started with 150 grit sandpaper on an MDF board. Then moved to a 300 grit diamond stone and finally a 1000 grit diamond stone. I'd say the work involved was much less than the Narex set and the same as the Richter chisel. Once the back was flat I put a secondary bevel on at 30 degrees. I used a Lie Nielsen honing jig to help. For the 1/4" chisel, I had to do it free hand. I started at 1000 grit diamond stone, got a bur, then moved to an 8000 grit wet sandpaper and finished all with a strop. It didn't take very much time at all to establish a razor sharp edge. The edge cut paper quite well. For $14, I'm quite pleased.I don't know how well they will hold the edge during use, but it only takes minutes to resharpen, so If your looking for an inexpensive woodworking chisel set, I recommend giving these a try. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good for the price *by on Reviewed in the United States October 11, 2023* For $15 you can't really expect too much of a set of 4 chisels. So ... these did not disappoint.The backs were slightly out of flat but not horribly so - easily lapped on 600 grit wet and dry in about 5 minutes. The factory edge is about what you would expect. After lapping the back flat I sharpened then with my Tormek using the stone in 1000 grit mode and then finishing on the stropping wheel. The tool is not perfectly square so you get a slightly skewed edge but it's only off by a couple of degrees. In a high end chisel I would send it back but, again, for $15 this is within acceptable tolerance.Once sharpened the edge was good enough for most operatiions. I haven't used them enough to assess the hardness of the steel but they did a decent job of chopping and paring white oak.Verdict: Good for hack carpentry or a beginner on a budget.
