Sprout Screen does the job
This sprout screen works great. I have sprouted lentils, mung bean, and soy beans so far with it. The holes seem small enough to sprout smaller seeds like alfalfa, but I haven't tried that yet.I have not had a rust problem. The screen does not rust at all. When used with a metal ring, the metal ring will probably rust a little; but that hasn't affected my sprouting at all because I rinse twice a day and rust is very minimal. The only con I have found is that the screen is sharp around the edges. That doesn't bother me, but it does have potential to cause problems. I think that a solid smooth edge would have been better, but hey...you can't beat the price.I would have given this 4.5 stars. It gets the job done and is good for the price.

Great item for a green lifestyle
I have purchased this item more than once, to add to a wide mouth canning jar, which I then give as gifts to friends. Sprouting lets people who don't garden grow a small portion of their food. It is a healthy learning experience. I prefer these metal screens to plastic ones (there is enough plastic in the world, already). This product worked exactly as expected. It fits in the round, screw on portion of the canning lid, and drains the water out of the jar without losing the sprouts. Sprouting jars make a great project for children, and while you can buy both lid and jar on Amazon (complete with seeds), you might find it less expensive to just order the lid, and use a jar you already have.Over time, people have lost connection to the food they eat. It's a connection that I feel is important, and that should be re-established. Sprouting is an excellent way to begin to reconnect. I definitely would recommend this product.

Too bad
I bought both this screen and the green plastic screen that substitutes for a mason jar lid. This screen works better in that you can fill and empty easily...no sprouts leak through...water goes right through the lid full force...excellent for rinsing sprouts. But, after only a week some rust started to appear at the edges of the screen under the lid. Too bad it's not treated or of a material to resist rust. The green lid is plastic, no rust. But you have to unscrew it each time to fill the jar with water and put the lid back on to pour the water out.

Works great
Works well just bought another one because I do so much sprouting. Yes the lid rusts a bit I think from the canning jar ring not from the screen, just kinda goes with the territory not a big deal to me. The screen itself is not rusty at all, not even the one I bought from this company at my local co-op probably a good 7-9 years ago.

Terrible!
I cannot recommend this product. I bought a few, excited to try my hand at sprouting.Well, today is the 3rd day, and the sprouts have been doing well! The alfalfa outgrew the clover and mung beans, so I decided to harvest some of it. Imagine my disgust when I unscrewed the lid and found that the screen had turned black along the edge! I wouldn't call it rust -- it's not red -- more like some less-friendly oxidation. (Nickel? Chromium?) And the black wasn't just some surface-finish, but a fine powder. I tried eating some of the sprouts, but couldn't, because they had a very strong metallic taste. Possibly poisonous, but definitely not wholesome. What a waste of my first batch of sprouts.I won't be deterred from this little hobby, but I'm going to pick up some of the plastic perforated lids instead.Notes: The edges are rough-cut, not finished or folded over. Also, if you do decide to ignore my recommendation and buy this product, it is designed to fit a widemouth jar.

These are very good screens. I needed some for sprouting alfalfa and clover seeds, both of which, are very small. With this screen, even the small seeds won't be washed away when you rinse them. Rust definitely is a problem, so after sprouting,I clean them with apple cider vinegar and baking soda and they look brand new again. Also, the price is unbeatable.

rust
the screen is a screen but don't try to use it with a metal jar ring- after 4 days of sprouting it collects rust from the metal jar ring

Don't use with the metal rings
Maybe it is the metal rings I have and since the jar is on it's side , but, these really need a plastic open ring so the rust doesn't creep onto the screen from the ring.I couldn't get the rust off by washing so will have to hit it with the wire wheel.
