Privateer Tales: On a Pale Ship
On a Pale Ship by Jamie McFarlane is the beginning of a new series staged in the Privateer Tales universe. I have to say that this looks very promising indeed. The protagonist is a military space pilot who gets drummed out of the service for mishandling a situation causing the death of one of the other pilots in his squadron. He eventually finds himself working for a distant friend who is one of the richest women in the system and who is over 400 years old, but don't tell anyone her age. Women don't like that, apparently. This story is one huge adventure from start to finish. Our hero gets run through with a sword early in the book, mostly dying but not all the way dead. The story revolves around genetic engineering and rebuilding a human into a human-looking cybernetic organism. A super soldier, if you will. Fast, deadly and virtually indestructible. The villians are building soldiers out of men with the 'Hero Gene' as well as children. Who would harm a child after all? Even one that was trying to kill you and very capable of doing so.Therein lies the problem. Destroy the evil gene splicers, save the children and the human race. No problemo! This is an amazing read that has action on almost every page. The storytelling is top notch, but fans of McFarlane have come to expect that quality from this inventive author. You should read this book. It ticks off all the bullet points that make a story great.Good protagonistBad villiansEsprit de corpsHumorRomance/sex (but not raunchy)Action and adventureSuspenseBelievable charactersGood character development/back storyWhat's not to like? Sit back, relax and read On a Pale Ship.

As good as it gets!
As an avid sci-fi reader for seven decades, I’ve quite literally read just about everything out there and I can tell you that very few of these have given me as much pleasure as the entire Privateer Tales series. Easily on a par with such favorite authors as Edgar Rice Burroughs, Roger Zelazny, Piers Anthony, S. A. Carey and M. R. Forbes, McFarlane’s plot lines, characters, pacing and wry humor are a compelling and satisfying read with each and every volume. They are a delightfully fresh approach to high adventuring across a particularly imaginative universe. Enjoy!

Another Great SciFi Book From Jamie McFarlane!
On A Pale Ship. Let me say upfront that I am a big fan of Jamie McFarlane’s writing. I’ve been not so patiently waiting for the next installment from the Privateer Tales series. This latest book is set in the same universe and during the same time period as those stories. It even shares a couple characters we encountered in the Privateer Tales series. Call it a spin-off perhaps.Jamie once again tells a great story of space adventure, recalling the space operas of the 40’s and 50’s. The characters are quickly developed and you soon find yourself loving the good guys and detesting the baddies. In this book we get to know a couple of bit characters from the Privateer Tales series much more thoroughly, and we get to meet a number of new characters that we can expect to continue to see as this series develops. If you like SciFi, you will enjoy this book. While sharing a universe and characters with Privateer Tales, you needn’t have read those books to enjoy this one. But trust me, after reading this one you’ll be starting that series!

This fun book is the back story for what one assumes will be a potentially endless set of superhero stories. In this book we have the brilliant mastermind business woman who has nearly endless resources. She is a modified human; and she is drop-dead gorgeous, with an emphasis on the drop-dead. She has created superheros in the past; but gots cold feet because she sees what the darkside could be.There is her not-so gorgeous former protege who has gone to the dark-side using the systems of the mastermind to grind out semi-super villains.Wonderful men and women who get semi-killed are caught up in a war for their very bodies between mastermind and protege. They are resurrected and resresurrected as pawns in the war; and depending on who does the resurrecting they are either really nasty but don’t work perfectly or they are really nasty when they need to be and yet have a soft and loving side to them. There is a good guy who is a modified human who one assumes is the product of the work done before the start of the book; and. like wise, a super villain created before the timeline of the book. They get swept up into the story line.Think of every good vs evil story you have ever read. This is a fun variation on the theme. Might make a good graphic novel.

A great start to a new storyline in the Privateer Tales universe
I love this first novel in a new storyline by McFarlane. This first book has great action, like all of his books, but this appears to be aimed at a more mature audience given the more descriptive sexual and violence elements. As with his other storylines (e.g. Liam in the other storyline in the Privateer Tales universe and Felix in the Witchy World storyline, the characters are three-dimensional and you care about them. I'm already caring about the characters in this storyline and I'm eagerly waiting to see if they develop and grow as McFarlane has been doing in his other storylines or if these will be like the red-uniformed extras in Star Trek.) The structure of this story is also different. We see characters separately in each chapter and then their third-person stories come together nicely. This is a complex story, masterfully crafted and written for hours of reading enjoyment. I want more, please!

I find all Jamie,s books to be fun to read and fast paced. With a bit sex along with the fast paced action. I feel this will be a good new set of books.

I've followed Jamie McFarlane's Privateer Tales from the very beginning and have loved the way the series has grown and expanded from a very small scale space mining operation to the crew that saved Earth. This book introduces some characters from the periphery of the Privateer universe as well as some new names The first half of the book sets the scene and introduces the characters and then quickly picks up the pace and the body count with some great battle scenes. The dialogue between the characters is tense, sometimes dark and occasionally laugh out loud funny. This was a real delight to read and I would recommend it to any sci fi fans.
