Paleo Takeout: Restaurant Favorites Without the Junk

This is a fantastic resource for anyone in the Paleo/WAP/Whole Foods community
This is a fantastic resource for anyone in the Paleo/WAP/Whole Foods community! The Ancestral Table is at the top of my go-to cookbook list, so I was really excited to see this come out. I really appreciate how much care Russ takes with his recipes. Paleo has gotten enough buzz that there are a lot of bloggers and even authors these days who will produce haphazard recipes that don't turn out at all the way they're advertised. All of the recipes I've tried so far taste really authentic. A perfect example is the pizza crust; most paleo pizza crusts serve as reasonable vehicles for toppings and I like some of the zucchini or cauliflower options. But sometimes you're cooking for a group that includes non-paleo eaters or you just really want that nostalgic legit pizza taste. This recipe turned out perfectly, you'd have no idea it wasn't a standard thin crust. Thus far I've also tried the Cashew Chicken, Moo Shu Pork, Tokushima Ramen, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Kare Kare. They've all been absolutely excellent and I can't wait to keep cooking my way through this book.A couple of side notes: While the instructions are excellent some of the recipes can be a little intimidating if you're where I was when I first transitioned to paleo and barely knew how to boil water. These days I definitely appreciate the layers and depth of flavor that these recipes bring, but if you're making a big diet change AND you're someone who doesn't have a ton of cooking experience be aware that some of these recipes might be too overwhelming. There are plenty of simple ones as well, but be aware that not all of these are good starter recipes for novices. That said, it feels amazing the first time you can make something that tastes amazing which you never previously would have dreamed of being able to cook! My other note is that this book is geared towards the Perfect Health Diet viewpoint which incorporates safe starches and grasped dairy. I've experimented with adding in both of these after being very strict paleo for about two years and I've found that elements of both work for me, so it's nice to have recipes that incorporate these nutrient dense foods that I love but aren't 'typical paleo'. That said if you're someone who follows a stricter approach, there is an excellent substitution guide. My best friend is on the autoimmune protocol and we cook together about once a week. Every recipe (some modified and some compliant as written) that we've tried from this book has turned out well, and she reports that the recipes she's tried herself have been great too.Ultimately I think this is a great addition to any paleo chef's arsenal. There are a ton of recipes, more than several of my other cookbooks put together, but all of excellent quality. It's a great way to satisfy those occasional takeout cravings, but even more it's a diet friendly way to try out other cuisines. Now that I've gotten into cooking, I love watching various food network shows and this book has given me the chance to make a lot of the dishes I see without the danger of stomach cramps or hives! :D

A watershed moment in paleo cookbook history
This book is a breath of fresh air for anyone out there who has spent hours trying to make overly convoluted and disappointing "paleo substitutes". Paleo croissants, anyone? Dry your tears of frustration and grab a copy of this book, these are not saccharin substitutions for the real thing, the few recipes I've tried so far have surpassed the versions I've had in restaurants.I've been at this paleo thing off and on since stumbling across it about 10 years ago because my body starts to malfunction if I don't stay at least somewhat in the ballpark. I am quite a bit healthier than I was at the start of this journey, and have a lot more latitude in what I am able to eat without pain or misery now than a half decade ago, but a book like this would have been a great tool for preventing backsliding when sticking closer to the plan was imperative. I am so glad it is here now for people who find themselves in that same predicament, and just want to eat a "normal dinner" with their family. Restaurants were my undoing so many times. This book is the cure for those who find themselves on the verge of giving up because of cooking separate dinners for the rest of the family (due to complaints about weird food) is too much to deal with. This doesn't even need to be a paleo cookbook. The cooking techniques in here make Asian cooking accessible in the way Julia Child made French cooking accessible to American cooks. Simply not knowing the cooking techniques to make food taste like it does at a couple of my favorite restaurants has kept me hooked on their line even if I knew I'd pay for it later. The recipes in this book have uncovered so many cooking mysteries, and presented them in a way that I don't feel overwhelmed trying them. The main draws to Chinese restaurants for me have been Hot and Sour Sour Soup, and the super tender thinly sliced meats in dishes like Broccoli Beef. Both are in here, and absolutely delicious. The tutorial on "velveting meat" helped me learn the best cooking trick I've been introduced to in ages.I haven't made it yet, but Okonomiyaki is pretty much my favorite thing ever, and was one of those foods I was willing to suffer for on the rare occasion I could find it offered in a restaurant. I get to have my cake and eat it too from here on out. I am so flippin' psyched words fail me.If the recipes and cooking lessons in here weren't enough to make this book delightful, the "at a glance" recipe index in the style of those wall mounted photographic restaurant menus has been a godsend for getting the kids involved in picking out what to make for dinner. So much less whining as a result, and they don't even know they are eating mom's weird paleo food.

This book is a must if you want to eat Paleo but crave the taste of the occasional takeaway!
I have tons of paleo books and this is up there as one of my faves. The Bam Bam shrimp is so easy and tastier than any takeaway I've had as is the Pad Thai! You can really tell that the author has done their research and has tried and tested these recipes. I am in the UK and have had no trouble buying any of the ingredients. This book is expensive but so worth it, it's one I have gone back to again and again.

Sensibly written and lovely tasty recipes
Really nice book and written in a sensible way. It allows you to make choices and doesn't make you feel guilty if you don't follow the Paleo diet to the letter and even offers you healthy 'choices'. Love it but not sure if it would go down too well with the staunch Paleo crew!

Super
