Bluebells are best planted in shady cool areas – around trees or underneath shrubs – which intensifies the flowers colour. The flowers prefer a humus-rich, moist, but well-drained soil that doesnot dry out in summer.Bear in mind that sown seed may take 9 to 24 months to germinate. However, you will be rewarded for your patience by a gracious splash of colour in the spring in the second year after sowing. Start seeds outdoors in late spring or early summer. Sprinkle the seeds in the garden bed and keep the area watered. The rest will happen naturally. Expect to have only leaves in the first year. A year after the flowers will appear. Indoors sow the seed in a tray filled with potting soil in the late winter.Sprinkle a light covering of vermiculite over the seeds.Sprinkle with water lightly to keep it moist but not soggy. The best room temperature for growing is 65 to 70 F.After 3 to 4 weeks when germination occurs, put the tray in sunny window and keep the soil evenly moist. Start hardening off the seedlings in mid-spring before transplanting after last frost.
