Very sobering
I've visited Auschwitz twice (in 1982 & 2015) and this book is really superb. The photos (both recent and from the years of terror at the camp), the reproduced artwork, and the very extensive & very informative written material; all of it is beautifully put together and gives a very thorough portrayal of what transpired. For those of you who live in metro NYC or who will be visiting during the next eight months: the exhibit upon which this book is based will open tomorrow at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and it will continue through January 3. Note that tickets must be purchased in advance.

Comprehensive and emotional
Auschwitz: Not Long Ago: Not Far Away is edited by Robert Jan Van Pelt with Luis Ferreiro and Miriam Greenbaum. This is the book that accompanies the exhibition by the same name. The exhibition I saw was at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. It was on it tour around the United States. The exhibition will eventually be housed in the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. The exhibition centers on Auschwitz, the largest and most prolific extermination center built and operated by the Nazis during World War II. In this horrible place, 1.1 million people- mostly Jews; but, also non-Jewish Poles, Romas, Homosexuals, Prisoners of War, political dissidents and others met their untimely deaths in the gas chambers and crematorias. Many were worked and starved to death or suffered diseases or were beaten or shot to death. The elderly and the young and any discerned to be unfit to work were killed upon entry into the camp. Only the strong and hardy young adults were generally accepted into the camp. Only the Czechs, Romas, and Hungarians were taken into camps and housed as families; all others were separated. The exhibition and the book are both very well done and sensitive to the subject. Both are highly recommended.

Lessons to never forget
Library book. No purchase. Fantastic book. Especially now, when some Americans are wont to glorify the Nazis and their heinous world views. Right here in our own nation. And indeed, when our own President doesn't call these misguided people out for their horrendous views and actions. This is a very good book that should remind us all what can happen when otherwise good people are led astray by a highly organized group of evil doers. Great stories and examples we should all be glad have been exposed and seen for what they were. Never again. Jamas. Jamais. Nunca!

Should be required reading
A read that should be a part of all school curriculum today. This book and learning about the Holocaust is a dichotomy for me; on the one hand I want to turn away because the stories are so horrific, on the other I believe it is vitally important to learn about this terrible time so as to keep it in our memories as we may be apt to repeat it in a different time and place. The Human condition has a short memory for events, and as we are seeing even today, deniers of this atrocity are questioning this time in history.

Well-Done and Thought Provoking Exhibit Catalogue
Very well-done and thought provoking catalogue of an essential exhibit everyone should view at least once. If you have already seen the exhibit, this volume is a reminder to never forget. If you are unable to view the exhibit in-person, the chapters in this work will give you a good overview of the essential points

A historic book but with distressing content!
A hardback book of very high quality, I would thoroughly recommend, though discretion required.
