A great score for Lockington again
Andrew Lockington is one of the bright young composers coming up who simply deserves a larger film, he's that good and San Andreas is one score that is simply amazing. While the movie might not be the greatest movie in the world it is an extremely fun movie that is enjoyable and a real treat of fresh air with great actors filling out the roles perfectly. Lockington begins the CD with a simple heroic but sprawling theme that is used throughout the movie as Ray Gains theme and the theme for the movie. I don't want to say too much because the score speaks for itself but the their are some really well performed soft moments along with great actions pieces as Ray tries to escape the Earthquake and falling buildings. One of the many things I love about this score is the sound of utter destruction that tears through the pieces. Mainly the one sound that is played just as things start falling or some sort of destruction happens. You'll recognize it by the distorted guitar-piano sound that just blast through the music. The rest of the piece sounds like an epic war piece and for the movie it fits perfectly. There is no need for too many electronics or crazy percussion sounds. Lockington does a perfect job of using the orchestra to paint a score that is both entertaining, emotional, new and vibrant without be too fancy. He has crafted a sprawling action score that serves the disaster genre right.

Amazing soundtrack to go with an amazing movie experience
Amazing soundtrack to go with an amazing movie experience. Lockington did a masterful job composing the score to match the mood of each scene. The "Hoover Dam" track is especially powerful and the ending of it is absolutely epic! While I would have liked a little bit stronger overall theme for the title track of San Andreas overall this is quite an enjoyable soundtrack that fits the movie like a glove! Bravo!

Wonderful! I really enjoyed Sia's cover of "California Dreamin'
Wonderful! I really enjoyed Sia's cover of "California Dreamin'," which was actually the main reason I purchased this soundtrack, but I've come to really appreciate the orchestral pieces. If you watch the behind-the-scenes feature on the DVD or BluRay, it actually explains some of the music from the movie.

Excellent
I. Love. This. Soundtrack! With all of the movie composers we've been losing lately, it's good to see them being replaced by some excellent composers like Lockington! If you like the soundtrack to Journey to the Center of the Earth (the one with Brendan Fraser) you'll LOVE this one!

A worthy addition to your disaster film collection
We certainly have a fascination with disaster films. From towering infernos to world wide climate change, we just can't seem to get enough. Some of these films are better than others and they usually make a pretty decent profit in theaters. Hollywood continues to push them out and many gladly pay to see them. We've seen the story before so what is the big draw to see them? It's probably because they are just fun to watch! Also, disaster films seduce us with the incredible special effects and you have to admit that Hollywood is getting better with this all the time. Yes, it's the same story with even better realism. Now, within those really cool effects we've got to have a story somewhere and with that your going need to support it with music. Hollywood can spend a lot of money on the effects but the only way to make them "special" and truly stand out is with a soundtrack to make them even more emotionally incredible.Looking through my collection of movie scores, I've noticed that the music for these films can be a mixed bag sometimes. Some reflect the musical tastes of the time in which they were created while others tend to be gigantic filler music pumped with a large brass section of the orchestra. There are a few that take the interesting approach of having the music take on the characteristic of the impending doom like that of Laurence Rosenthal's "Meteor" score. This particular score, composed by Andrew Lockington, is very similar to what Harald Kloser did for "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012". It's a pretty big sound throughout the score that blends a lot of action noise with an occasional developed theme. I'm leaning towards Lockington's score here however because when the theme comes, it's a pretty good one. I also enjoy his scoring of the more emotional moments in the movie and instead of rushing through these scenes with only a steady hum of the violins, he puts up an effort to give some really heartfelt moments. Tracks 12 (Remembering Mallory) and part of 13 (Coit Tower Destroyed) are example's of this. There are some really great action themes in the score as well that I am sure do a good job of reflecting some big moments in the movie. One of my favorites in this score is the very epic sounding "Skydive" (track 14). It's a short cue but a very cool one. As a matter of fact, the shortest tracks are some of the best in my opinion. I guess it's because some of the longer ones tend to get a little exhausting to listen to because of the intensity they sometimes reach. I am sure this has a different feel when watching in context with the movie however. They can be enjoyed and appreciated on there own but I find myself developing playlist of the shorter cues. Some of my favorites are "San Francisco" (6), "Main Title" (1), "Skydive" (14), "Extinction" (18), and "I Love You Dad" (21). Another cue deserving a mention is number 22, "Resuscitation", it's a great combo of theme, action, and emotion that is put together especially well and very fitting for what is probably a big climatic moment at the end of the movie. There are some other interesting facts about this particular score that can be found in the CD's liner notes. One is that Lockington used seismic wave data from the San Andreas fault and turned it into music. I just wish there was more of an explanation of this, in the liner notes, and how it was used in specific tracks. I do appreciate Lockington's desire to create this score in a unique way by using the "music of an earthquake". I just wish this could of been explored more to give this particular music an even more interesting sound. To me, the score tends to nestle a little too close with the other disaster scores of recent times and doesn't find a way to "break away". By no means does it make it a bad score for the movie, in fact, it's a good score with some awesome moments. I encourage film music fans to hear for themselves. One track in particular is really shaking things up and that is Sia's rendition of California Dreamin'. It's a great song for the film and the interpretation fit's very well. Oddly, she isn't even mentioned in the credits of the CD insert.I like to own physical CDs so I was upset to see that this was a digital release and the only way to get a physical copy was to go through the CDR route with Amazon. I've purchased other CDRs from Amazon before and I've always been impressed with their packaging of these. They include picture discs, liner notes, and everything you'd expect with the "look" of a store bought CD. They sound great and they've been pretty nice to purchase. This particular CDR was a little more expensive than their other previous offerings however and I was disappointed to see that they skimped a little with this particular package. They've included some pictures from the movie and recording sessions and there is a note from the composer which is cool but they only have the track listing on the inside of the CD. The back cover of the CD has nothing. The listed credits are incomplete and the total package seems a bit plain to me. It's still a bit better than what I could of done with my CD burner and printer however. The score has a total of 24 tracks and runs about 1 hour and 13 minutes.

Really good score!
There are some very nice, expansive, heroic sections of this soundtrack. If you're a fan of big orchestral soundtracks like those by James Horner and Hans Zimmer, you may very well enjoy this one as well.

Uninspired and yawn inducing...
This just may be the most uninspired, yawn inducing soundtrack to a disaster film I have heard, It does absolutely nothing for me. I buy a lot of movie soundtracks and this one is just amateurish and boring. Same themes over and over, but none all that noteworthy, or attention grabbing. It's just kind of there. Listen to soundtracks from any Emmerich film and then listen to this. You will see the difference. I am not surprised by a sub-par soundtrack for this film. The movie wasn't all that great to begin with. I honestly can't believe they are making a sequel to this pg-13 kiddie garbage.

TOLLER SOUNDTRACK...
