Two in one
This is a book that causes the reader to feel and think about whether or not this situation could actually occur ; what it would take for us to bring it into fruition or is it possible to stop the chain of events as they happen with the hope of preventing this ending.

A tribute to Jane Goodall
Eva starts out like a regular teenage fantasy book: Eva, who lives in a futuristic world, wakes up in a hospital and is unable to move her body.... only her eyes. Her mother explains that there has been an accident and Eva was hurt but things will be OK... she promises that gradually Eva will be able to move her entire body. Eva senses that her mom is making a special effort to seem fine....and as the story unfolds she understands the reason for her mother's efforts. The seemingly fantastical beginning changes however and a beautiful tale unfolds which is a sort of tribute (so I feel) to the Chimpanzees researcher Jane Goodall (to whom this book is dedicated). Following the reading of this book you will remain with a better understanding of the Chimpanzees world and of the need to preserve these animals way of life. I do not mean to say that this book "preaches" the reader. This does not happen. However you are drawn to the Chimpanzees life through the beautiful tale.

Interesting and thought-provoking. For adults also.
This isn't just a simple book for kids. Different, for certain. I never imagined that I would Google 'sexual swellings' on the rumps of chimpanzees, as I had no idea what that looked like. The author presents us with a futuristic scenario unlike anything we can ever imagine. Complications unfold, yet I feel that the tale is really a critique to society, its greed and growing lack of empathy. It targets technology implying that they will use whatever means they deem necessary to reach their goals. Peter Dickinson takes us to the end of civilization as we know it.The deep array of emotions displayed by Eva and her perception of what the other characters were feeling were my favorite parts of the story.

Progress, thoughtfulness, depth and surprise
Some books are tricky. Some are clever. Some have great science. Some are full of feelings. And then, some have an almost intangible "umami" to them. This book as them all. And great umami!

one of the worst books EVER!
I was assigned this book by my RLA teacher and started out thinking that it was going to be an interesting book because the 1st part was a page turner. Part 2 was so long and drawn out w/ all of the commercials and chimp play that it made me happy when she died. I enjoy most books but I hated this creepy, horribly written story.

Well-written, pessimistic story
EVA is the story of a young girl having her consciousness transferred to the mind of a chimpanzee after being horribly mangled in a traffic accident. The story is set in a bleak future in which essentially all large wild animals are extinct, except for those directly protected and cared for by people. The explanation of how Eva’s consciousness replaced that of the chimp’s sounded more like a recreation of her consciousness than a transfer, so it seemed that her consciousness should still be in her mangled body. Perhaps her human body died? The story is well-written, and if one can swallow the idea that a chimp’s brain could be altered to accommodate a human consciousness, her experiences and feelings seem realistically portrayed. My objection to the story is its pessimism. This is not because I’m addicted to hysterical optimism. Bernard Shaw wrote somewhere that people who see things clearly are often accused of pessimism. This was my motto even before reading his line. However, I didn’t see the pessimism of EVA as realistic.

Memorable book about body-switching
I first read this book years ago, and re-read it recently. It's such a sensitively written story about betrayal and survival, about what makes us who or what we are.
