Terrific reproductions of the art, rather tepid thinking and writing
I love Hockney's work, and found the catalog rather disappointing. It seems to be aimed at students of art history -- the accompanying texts are more about historical context (which style is Hockney using or ignoring or commenting on here?) and sources (this image is from a men's physique magazine, that one from ancient Egyptian sculpture) than about the paintings it's supposedly discussing. Any discussion of individual works is usually quite brief and only occasionally illuminating or helpful in examining the piece itself. This was presumably intentional on the part of the editors, since the various individual contributors all seem to write with the same voice. I will confess that for those reasons I gave up on the texts about halfway through, and just concentrated on the reproductions, which are excellent. I also didn't read the "essays" at the end. So maybe I missed some things. But I'd still rather have had more on the specific works and much, much less on its various contexts. The writing, for me, gets a lot of facts and factoids but misses much of Hockney's spirit and élan.

Good Addition to the Collection
This book is an excellent example of David Hockney's work, it offers a full career retrospective as well as bright, vibrant examples of work from across the six-decades of creating. I would recommend it to any admirer of his work, as well as anyone seeking to learn a bit more about the artist.

Lovely addition to a collection of exhibit catalogues
This is a lovely addition to any collection of exhibit catalogues and a great companion to the retrospective at the Tate Britain last year (2017). Substantively, I think the content is thoughtful and interesting without reading like a textbook or biography. The book quality is good, though I think that the hard-back version is quite a bit nicer and in retrospect, I would have shelled out a little more for it over the soft-back.

Gorgeous companion book to the best Hockney exhibition ever
I saw this exhibition in London last year, and was blown away. It shows his evolution as an artist, always changing, always experimenting. The show - and book - are dense, packed with his very best work from the last six decades. The book itself is beautifully printed and laid out, the cover is thick and strong and meant to last. This is *the* Hockney book of the moment.

Great quality of text and images
Shows a wide range of Hockney's work and a good balance between text and images. I got the soft cover and still think it looks as presentable as the hard-cover without having to spend too much!

Great history, good choice of images. Understable analysis.
Comprehensive study for interested public. Maybe not enough for an art critic.

A lasting reminder of a life times work to date
The exhibition was a superb display of the genius of this artist. Such a width of media employed: from photographic en-prints arranged in brilliant montages to gigantic paintings, video and film - not to mention the finest draughtsmanship with manipulation and application of colour. The catalogue is as far as is practical, a fine, lasting reminder of the comprehensive exhibition at the Tate Britain this year

Thank you Mr Stephens!
Just my opinion but I would say that this is the finest piece of work to summarize this remarkable artist's beautiful work throughout his whole career. Everything you need to see is here; it's as close as you can get to having the Tate gallery exhibition living on your bookshelf. And a steal at this price.

EXCELLENT CATALOGUE/BOOK
After seeing the exhibition at Tate Britain, just knew I had to have the catalogue. It gives an excellent overview of the show.
