Great story...lots of typos
We are reading this in our homeschool group as part of our history & literature studies. The story itself has engaged the kids (ages 10, 11, and 12), but there are many typos on the Kindle version, which is really annoying. Maybe we can practice finding and editing errors with it, too. I highly recommend this for the content, despite the errors, because the story brings to life often-ignored pieces of our history. I would suggest caution for some readers, though, as there is domestic violence, a frightening accident, and discussion of forced sterilization. I have enjoyed reading it along with our kiddos and discussing it with them to help them really "get it" and make connections they might otherwise miss.

Excellent book on so many levels
I had to read this for a class, but if I'd known about it, I would have read about it in my free time anyways. This was a very informative and touching book about how Native Americans have integrated into "mainstream" culture, while still sometimes holding on to their own cultures and traditions. The subtle background regarding the Vermont Eugenics Project is tragic and horrifying, and I wish that more people were aware of what our own country tried to do (and sometimes did do) to people they felt were "undesirable".Joseph Bruchac has written a memorable story and I recommend it to anyone....Teachers - this is a great book to introduce to your students about the stereotypes about Native Americans and about what they're actually like today.

Perfect book
Perfect book for all 5th and 6th grade students. Part of our history that has been ignored.

Hidden Roots Review
This is a fantastic book. I really like Bruchac's writing. The afterwords, which includes the historical details that the book is based on, is fantastic for anyone looking to teach about contempory native peoples. There is, also, lots of good information on the Abenaki's, which is excellent for teaching about New England and some Canadian native peoples.

Good story
There are a few basic grammatical errors, unexpected in a published book since they're so easy to catch, but it doesn't take away from the story. I recommend this to anyone if they're looking for good Children's Literature with morals and a good story.

Excellent book, highly recommend
Bruchac's books always hit the mark. This book tells of a boy who learns a tragic and horrific history that has had an impact on his family's lives. Excellent book, highly recommend.
