A most compelling page turner
I am addicted to the works of Daniel Silva. The depth of intrigue, history, and rich characters keep me coming back for more.

More than a spy story
Reads like a Le Carre thriller but Silva uses a different recipe to build suspense. The books are loaded with history about Israel and though the Smiley figure of the Israeli Secret service may be a complete fiction, the roots and the missions seem more fact than fancy. Considering the emotional nature of the ongoing conflicts, the treatment of both sides was objective. In fact, the ongoing quest for truth felt more like a who-done-it CSI story. Yet the topic of discrimination is clearly personal and these are clearly tales of revenge. This might be beach reading for some, but its also a very sophisticated use of fiction. The central figure happens to use art restoration as a cover for espionage and visits cathedrals of Europe to work on the great masters. The author, like his hero, examines, illuminates and reveals, moments lost to history in order to paint a more complete picture. Both entertaining and instructive, the lessons about Israel, the Holocaust, the Palestinian conflict, the affiliation of Nazi war criminals with swiss banks and the indignity of discrimination really touched a nerve.

Silva books
Excellent series featuring Gabriel Allon. Some historical truth which adds. So well written that it takes no time to read all four books

Silva is an artist
I've read all of Daniel Silva's books more than once. The first four books always bring tears to my eyes. I care about the characters, I feel their pain and I feel their victory. I can see the paintings and their restoration, I can hear the Wellingtons sloshing through the flood waters of Venice, feel the icy rain on my cheeks in Poland, see the sun rising over the mountains. Silva is truly an artist. If you're looking for humor, read a different story. If you're looking for a true to life espionage thriller, read these books. Read them in order.

a novel can be instructive
This was the 4th Allon book I’ve read over the past 2 months. With out an attempt to be factual - although I’m sure some of the information is fact - this novel gives a general sense of the horrors carried out by individuals that I can hardly believe are human. With a connection to the characters firmly in place I was compelled to read on.

More than Spy Action
Yes, "Spy Thrillers," but also much more. Excellently researched and one gets the sense of reading "history." Settings and geography read like travelogues. And a gripping insight into the Holocaust, or Shoah, especially Book #4 done with feeling. Of course, the "thriller" is there with this author. The characters are superb and their relationships and reactions most human. These books are so much more than just good spy novels. They are also the launching pad for the Gabriel Allon series and a promise of entertainment and insights. You will get hooked, and these books are the hook.

Daniel Silva is the best!
A teacher colleague of mine recommended Daniel Silva's books to me since I had confessed to him that I really liked to read the espionage genre. Silva takes the espionage novel to a new level of intellect. I enjoy his work because he challenges the reader to broaden their knowledge of middle eastern culture and geography. I read these four books over one weekend. I found that if I kept Google Earth open on my computer along with a site for foreign word interpretation, I could enjoy the books even more. Silva's research is really incredible considering that it would be very easy just to make-up places. He does a great job blending fact with fiction.

Profunda pena, homenaje indispensable
