Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Gauntlet - Season 12 [Blu-ray]

Just not all that great MST3K.
I've been a hardcore MSTie for decades. I loved the show when it was on Comedy Central and Sci Fi. But the Netflix era just isn't very good. The 11th season wasn't horrible because they picked good movies to riff, but this season (season 12) has really bad movies (by bad I mean movies that just aren't good for riffing). Jonah is a poor replacement for Joel or Mike and the two guys who voice (but do not puppet) the bots sound too similar to each other to figure out who's talking when they're in silhouette. The "mads" aren't as good as the Forrester/Frank or the Pearl/Dr. Bobo/Brain Guy teams. I'm actually sorta glad that Netflix has dropped them. Riff Trax and Cinematic Titanic are better than this show. The Netflix era is to the rest of MST3K what Discovery is to the rest of Star Trek, an over-produced, yet not as good version of the original.

The Day Time Ended...for MST3K, again
A definite improvement over season 11, with room to breathe between the riffs, Jonah, Hampton, and Baron bringing out the distinct personalities of their characters, and the host segments serving up actual laughs instead of a meaningless string of guest stars. Of the six movies in the Gauntlet, only "Lords of the Deep" is unwatchable with or without the riffing; the rest compare favorably with any number of good second- and third-season episodes from the show's original run.Too bad Netflix dropped it, but then this is a show whose heart is in low budget network affiliate TV, where it had the time and freedom to grow in the first place. Didn't season 11 strike you as the streaming service equivalent of "MST3K: The Movie"? (*shudder*)

6 more great riffs for films that deserve it
I only joined Netflix streaming after they picked up MST3K. It's always been a great show offering a ton of laughs per episode and it's a crying shame that Netflix has become so pompous about being a movie producer that they can't supply more episodes of this show, one of the earliest and longest lasting truly independent tv series, a true original. If you have ever enjoyed an episode of this show, you already know that you can't go wrong with a set of new episodes of the best cow-town puppet show there's ever been!!!

Worth getting for a MSTie
These are enjoyable but Atlantic Rim is honestly a horrible movie which would have been difficult even in Season 2 of the original. The male lead is so, so, so terrible.Kinga is wonderful as the lead Mad, but Max does not get fully his role on the show. I would have like to have heard more of Gypsy, and the two new bots roles are very limited. Not a fan of the ending of the last episode either.Still, great to have new episodes.

Not As Fun As Previous Season
Wow. This time they picked really bad movies to riff this time! The Mac & Me and The Day Time Ended are standout episodes. Lords of The Deep and the remaining episodes in this collection are really tough to endure. There are bad movies and then there are the terribly bad movies that not even MST3K could save. You will see some in this collection.

It’s Netflix MST3k!
The best MST3k with the new guy so far.

Great MST3K experience / Lousy Amazon delivery
The season is fantastic. It is very funny, well-paced, and the movies riffed are as horrendous as they need be. Great MST3K vibes. The missing star is not for the product itself, but for the delivery of the package. My plastic box was all but destroyed on the inside, as though someone not only let it fall, but outright tossed it against the wall. It cannot stand and must lie down for my discs not to wabble inside. Unacceptable for the price of shipping AND handling.

The world needs more MST3K
Each year, Netflix produces dozens of shows. This is one of them.
