Sick Things: An Anthology of Extreme Creature Horror

Although this book wasn't as good as another book that preceeded it, called "Vile Things"... This book was still a really great book... it had the right amount of "grossness" to keep me reading it up until the last page. I doubt you'll be disappointed if you decide to buy it... just don't eat before reading it... maybe not even AFTER reading it. :-)

I guess the title built some false expectations for this collection. I wanted to like the tales but found that many left me flat. There are sick things in this book but they weren't 'monster' based, at least for me.

Loved the stories!!

Extreme creature horror? Well, there are creatures, but I found little here that was horrifying or extreme.Some stories had some gore, one or two had some gross-out moments, but in almost every case the writer's descriptions were so blase' that you hardly felt a twinge. Also notable by it's absense was any convincing sense of dread in any of the stories.As with all anthologies, you take your chances, and there are a couple of nicely original stories here that are at least a good read; even if they aren't necessarily scary or horrifying.The word "extreme" may have applied in, say, the turn of the century, but there's nothing here that pushes boundries today. I don't feel the least bit compelled to read any of these stories again, even the few I liked.This collection simply doesn't deliver on it's title or your expactations. OK, there's a critter of some kind in almost all, but the stories are not extreme, they're not horrifying, and they're not even creepy. Some could have been, because there are some great concepts here, but the authors simply fail to pull off instilling any feeling of drama, creepiness or dread in the reader.I hope the authors grow to really capitalize on their inspiration. But for now, this collection is way too short on atmosphere and real horror.

Not very exciting at all. Does not grab the mind and wisp you off into that other world. Is pretty sick and gross though. Note very creative like I expected.

Sick Things is a sequel of sorts of Vile Things. Instead of body horror though, this time we get creatures. Now body horror is my favorite but creature horror comes in at a very close second. God Bless Comet Press for giving us great collections of wonderful NEW ideas. What a revelation. Gone are (most) of the creatures herein are new and different ideas. Hell the only "zombie" story here is unconventional, funny, gory, and written by former Spin City star Michael Boatman! I'm so sick of zombies and vampires I could spew and I'm so glad the editor of Sick Things saw fit to keep the genre tropes down to a minimum. Many of the same authors that were included in Vile Things and/or The Death Panel return here, and again they're the best of the bunch. Fred Venturini turns in a story about creatures that steal secrets, Randy Chandler tells us about a woman raped by demons. Tim Curran gets my award for most descriptive tale in the bunch, a retelling of Hansel and Gretel, Sean Logan's tale, "The Neglected," was so disturbing and uncomfortable I almost couldn't get through it. One of the more creative and bizarre of the bunch, Legacy of the Last Invader by M. Shaw, is about a now exstinct group of aliens whose sole purpose was to repopulate their race with our women, the problem is they're hung like baseball bats and kill nearly every woman they meet. The always impressive John Shirley turns in a story about the after life and Jefferey Hale finishes the set with a story every adolescent male would cringe at. 17 stories in all and not a bad one in the bunch. Some are more successful than others but all were a good read.Comet Press once again has produced a superior collection of extreme horror. Honestly I feel like this one's the best yet from them. All the authors here turn in tight, sharp work that surpass the previous collections. Most of the authors here are virtual unknowns some are even publishing their first work here but don't let that deter you, these are going to be the horror leaders of tomorrow, catch them now and be ahead of the curve. Recommended.

Only the John Shirley story is worth reading. Forget about this book.

Bizarr, verstörend, verdammt gut.Threshold: Ein junger Mann wird auf einer Party mit sehr merkwürdigen jungen Frauen konfrontiert, die nicht wirklich Frauen zu sein scheinen. Es geht bizarr und sehr gut weiter...This is my body: Michael, Buchhalter oder etwas in der Richtung, legt sich in seinem Job gleich mal mit dem dort beschäftigten Koch an. Doch dies ist kein normaler Koch.Hunger Pangs: Sybil lebt mit ihrer Mutter, die unheimlicj träge und fett ist, zusammen. Ihr Freund, besser gesagt Lover, gibt ihr eine Pille, die vielleicht helfen kann, dass Synills Mutter nicht mehr so viel frisst. Dies hat allerdings verheerende Folgen. Auch verdammt gut.Fly on the wall: Ein Mann tritt eine neue Arbeitsstelle an, seiner Chefin ist er sofort verfallen, wenn nur nicht andauernd in ihrer Anwesenheit so viele Fliegen wären...Legacy of the invaders: Kann man als SciFi-Horror bezeichnen. Ein Sträfling wurde für eine Spezialeinheit rekrutiert, die gegen außerirdische Invasoren kämofen soll. Jahre nach dem Ende dieser Missionen trifft er auf eine Kampfgenossin, die er eigentlich für tot hielt.Acceptable losses: Hier geht es um eine britische Armee-Einheit im zweiten Weltkrieg, die die unschlne Aufgabe hat die gefallenen Kameraden zu bergen. Angetrieben werden sie von einem unheimlichen Orakel. Daraus hätte man mehr machen können.An Unfortunate incident in the slaughterhouse: Auf einem Viehhof dreht eine Kuh durch. Zwar scheint die Situation schnell erledigt zu sein, doch eben nur scheinbar. Wieder sehr gute Geschichte.Rotsworth: Ein älterer Mann scheint in seiner Nachbarschaft ein unheimliches Wesen zu haben. Eher herkömmlich, bzw. hätte man auch mehr draus machen können, aber ok.Evil, bent, and candy-sweet: Eine Horrorversion von Hänsel und Gretel. Gut, hätte aber länger sein können.Heat: Ein typischer US-Red-Neck und seine Frau haben eine unheimliche Begegnung mit einem unbekannten Wesen, was Folgen hat. Auch eher Durchschnitt.The Neglected: Ein Mann mittleren Alters muss sich um seinen kranken Vater kümmern. Und genau wie früher mit seinen Haustieren ist ihm die Pflege seines Vaters bald zuviel. Hat Atmosphäre, gut gelungen.Betty and the cambion: Hier geht es um ein verfluchtes Haus bzw. um das, was jungen Frauen passiert, wenn sie dieses Haus betreten. Gut.Jimmy Sticks and the outlaw critter of doom: Im Stile von The Crow. Ein Päarchen wird brutal getötet, nur zum Spaß, der Mann kehrt zurück als Untoter und macht Jagd auf seine Killer. Auch wenn das Prinzip bekannt ist, so ist die Geschichte sehr gut.Ranching the sleore: Harold und Molly haben ihr Kind durch eine Frühgeburt/Fehlgeburt verloren. Doch alsbald wird Ersatz gefunden... Endet zu früh, wie ich finde, aber gute Idee.Paper angels on fire: Ein Betrüger, der sich als Wunderheiler ausgibt, wird ermordet. Doch echter Horror erwartet ihn im Leben nach dem Tode. Sehr kreativ.The special son: Chase, ein offenbar leicht zurückgebliebener 30 jähriger Mann und Sohn von streng gläubigen Leuten, findet bald heraus, warum und dass er tatsächlich sehr besonders ist.Insgesamt eine sehr gute Sammlung von Horrorkurzgeschichten. Zwei, drei sind eher mäßig, aber es gibt keine Totalausfälle und mit Masse sind die Geschichten wirklich sehr gut.

I have been a fan of extreme horror (sometimes called splatterpunk) for some time. Of all of the anthologies I have read from this genre, this is definitely my favourite. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any hardcore fan of the extreme horror genre. Each story is gripping and creepy with a lot of them having an erotic undertone which makes it all the more enjoyable.

Preety sick but OK horror anthology.A few stood out like:Legacy of the Last Invader(alien sex maniacs)Hunger Pangs(mutated fecal tapeworm)Evil Bent Candy Sweet(cannibal twist on Hansel and Gretel)Heat(excellent werewolf story)THe other were OK to poor.

The tag line for this collection is "Sick Things: An Anthology of Extreme Creature Horror." You could also insert Extremely Bad into that title. I like monsters and weird creatures but this just came across as an excuse to fill page upon page with poorly written B movie tosh. Killer Cows? Devil Possums? Give me a break. And some quality for that matter. The only saving grace of this collection is Tim Curran's "Evil, Bent and Candy Sweet", a retelling of Hansel and Gretel that puts the grim in The Brothers Grimm.
