Java explained for beginners
I am new to Android development. I was struggling to follow tutorials and ebooks on Android development because I just did not have enough (any) knowledge of Java. Jeff Friesen has tailored his book beautifully to address all the concepts I needed to understand in order to proceed with my own Android development. I would have saved myself many fruitless hours if I had read this book before embarking on any Android specific texts. The book is easy to follow and easy to "dip into" specific topics to refresh/renew understanding of key concepts. It is one of my main references, my go to guide when I'm stuck.

very nicely done
up to page 85 so far and i like it. it gives background on the java flavors in chapter one. this book only discusses the java api that is relevant for android programming, which is prefect because i am learning how to write android apps. chapter 2 discusses the basic variable types available in java. chapter 3 discusses classes/objects. so far it has been very clearly written. will update this review as i read more of this book. so far i am very happy with the contents and presentation.

Great book
The book is eloquently written with lots of examples and well explained paragraphs. I'm still busy, but I really enjoy it!Perhaps best suited for people with some programming experience though, rather than first timers.

It's an overview and a collection of good starting points
Concise, well written. It's an overview and a collection of good starting points. The first two chapters were worth the book. The clear explanation of why Java works the way is does was very informative.

An abstract text
A heads-up for aspiring Android programmers: this text ONLY covers Java. It has absolutely no context in any Android development environment. It defines code without any description of how to implement it (ie, Eclipse, Android SDK), or even what objects the code belongs in. It's what I've come to call an "ivory castle textbook" that separates out the relationships as though they don't exist. Experience says there will be a re-learning curve once the developer starts using their tool of choice. If this fulfills your need, go for it. I believe the scope is too narrow for the subject, despite the hefty size.

Confusing
Not well wriiten. Too much technical details that make it confusing so it's hard to follow.

Need concise and clear description
Since Java is created and strongly influenced by C++, some terminologies are better be the same. The big problem for a new comer to read this book is that too many similar, confusing terminologies been used. Why not just based on some common used, recognized ones. The last section on p69 and the 3rd section on p87are confusing for a new reader. The whole page of p88 needs to be concise and get to the point.

Consigliato!
