The timer is inside the battery box, you can see the timer on and timer off when you open the battery box,Once you have set the timer button to "Timer on", the lights will turn on in the programmed timing sequence of 6 hours on, 18 hours off over each 24 hour period. Can these strings be cut to length?

I’m not sure. If you cut it, it may short out. Maybe you could look for a shorter light strand?
