The truth is that Suzy Bogguss, whose early music reflected her love of Western tunes and yodeling, never really fit into assembly-line Nashville. Rarely did her major-label producers allow her to reveal her true self. This time, she reveals nothing but that. Masterfully produced by Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson, she's at home with every tune, be it time-honored jazz chestnuts like Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" and Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" or fresh, witty contemporary numbers by Nashville jazz chanteuse-writer April Barrows. Benson, who duets with Bogguss on Barrows's "Cupid Shot Us Both with One Arrow," wisely avoids using a big band. Instead, he surrounds her with a small band of Asleep at the Wheel alumni--including pianist Floyd Domino and driving, Stuff Smith-inspired fiddler Jason Roberts--that provides a sharper, more deft accompaniment than any bigger band could. Liberated from Music Row's relentless pursuit of radio-friendly mediocrity, Bogguss has at last nailed it to the wall with this smart, elegant, and joyous effort. --Rich Kienzle

FUN & PHANTASTIC MUSIC; DULL, GRUMPY COVER PHOTOS

*by L***E on December 12, 2016*

SWING is a great, whimsical, cute, lively, spontaneous, almost unbelievably happy album with Suzy's great voice and musicians who are superb. I only wish the cover photos had been chosen more carefully. Suzy is very cute and the liner notes have two lively photos that could have captured her cuteness and the album's fun flavor. Instead, we have Suzy looking as if she did not have any fun making the album at all. Suzy, if you picked the cover photos, what can I say? You should have used the cute ones inside the liner notes.

    a re-review, add a half star and a comment

Suzy Bogguss has a very good voice for sure, though not the kind that makes a song the way Emmylou or Jane Monheit (from another genre) can. Her songs work because she sounds really good, and she sounds like she's having fun. She's an unaffected singer, which makes her really different from most. On this disk, as the title says, she's moved completely into jazz-tinged western swing style, and she handles the swing part very well. (she's done it before -- her contribution of Old Fashioned Love to the Bob Wills celebration album by Asleep at the Wheel is outstanding) Backed again by Roy Benson, she sounds completely at ease here. I would not have thought she could do so well with Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me or Comes Love, but they are good versions for sure. This disk is her best album as a whole that I know of -- there are NO songs you want to skip over...several years later, i revisited this review and decided i was really stingy and wrong-headed in my assessment. First, it is more than a 5 star album, but i try to save 5 for a handful of disks... Second, and more important -- Suzy Bogguss has an exceptional voice, without being as distinctive or embellished as Emmylou or Monheit. It is a voice without artifice, and her diction is unexcelled. for a treat, look at the youtube video of her singing After You've Gone with Chet Atkins. It's stunning.

So Much More Than A Country Singer

*by M***T on January 27, 2009*

Suzy Bogguss proves once again that she is soooooo much more than just a country singer. Oh there's nothing wrong with being a country singer, there are people who make a good living that way and have thousands of fans and big ranches and ride around in Silver Eagles but this artist can blow with the best Big Band singers and still keep the Country fans happy. Straighten Up and Fly Right will be familiar to all of the Nat King Cole fans and Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me may be a version destined to be known as Suzy's standard but the real hidden treasures are in the tunes you may not have heard before, Burnin' the Toast For You and Stay Out Of My Dreams will put a smile on your face and leave a melody running through the corridors of your mind. Even if you don't like Country this should be in your collection.
