Life: Season 1

Life is Very Good
Get the marketing info at [...]In his first major role since BAND OF BROTHERS, Damian Lewis (who played Major Winters) is an LA cop who goes to prison for 12 years for a triple murder he didn't commit. Exonerated after 12 years in the big house, he accepts an undisclosed settlement agreement (millions) and returns to the force, this time as a detective. There is a lot of conflict. He has been separated from society for over a decade and the experience has turned him into a little bit of a weirdo, quoting Zen philosophies at inappropriate times and such. The only partner that LA's finest could shackle him with is just 4 months clean from a pretty big drug problem. His ex-wife has remarried. His father never visited him once in 12 years and, worse, never let his mother visit even though she was apparently dying of a terminal disease. (We infer that she died while he was inside). His financial advisor is an ex-con sent up for money-laundering (Adam Arkin) whose life he saved in prison. Arkin now inhabits the space above our boy's garage at the mansion, sort of like a middle-aged Kato Kaelin. He has no permanent relationships with women. His ex-partner is still a beat cop who feels no remorse over his wrongful conviction and quite a bit of jealousy over the settlement and the fact that the ex-con is now a detective. The majority of the police force treats him with kid gloves, ostracizing him because they don't trust his motives. Why return to the force? They fear he is returning to settle a personal vendetta 12 years in the making. So he is the inveterate outsider, which only serves to amuse him.In the closing scene, we find that his Lieutenant may have been personally involved in the conspiracy that originally framed him for the slayings. That's the premise. It may be a bit cerebral for certain folks. Also, since Damian is a phenomenal actor, that might not sit well with folks expecting acting where the characters merely "phone it in" like Roth in Law and Order, for instance. The Pilot focuses on a nine year old boy who was shot through the chest, murdered. His father is in prison. His step father is a pot head. His mother is a basket case. His dog took a single bullet for the kid and bit off the shooter's pinkie. (Good boy!)When they find the killer, they are unable to charge him with murder but they do charge him with a much lesser crime. Then they send him to the same prison where the little boy's father is serving a nickel. It was a very powerful scene. My review. First, there were no explosions. I was a little disappointed by that but remain hopeful. However, a brand spanking new Caddy is run over by a gigantic farm tractor. That was pretty cool. Not a real car chase per se, but he does race his car around lonely LA back streets, enjoying the freedom of it, while simultaneously trying to convince himself he isn't attached to the vehicle. Also, he pulls over a guy and issues a traffic citation (something that detectives really don't do) to a guy for changing lanes without signaling (something that no LA cop would really bother to do). Then we learn that this or similar behavior is a weekly ritual, and that his target is the man who made the mistake of marrying his ex-wife while he was wrongly serving time. The directorial style is straight forward, like any good crime drama should be. The show chooses to familiarize the viewer with unseen or even long past events through a series of 30 second documentary style interviews with interested parties.Interview with the ex-wife:Q: "So the entire time, he maintained his innocence."A: "Through the entire trial and the whole time he was in there."Q: "And how did you feel when it turned out that he was innocent and he was exonerated?"A: "I don't think I want to do this anymore."The lighting is good. The soundtrack is a little mellow when it's present.I was vaguely bothered by all the nonsensical Zen references. It struck me that the writers read a "Zen for Dummies" book and pitched him random Buddha quotations out of context. That aside, in my opinion, if the show stays true to the pilot and the characters stay true to their natures, my gut tells me that this show is going to be a phenomenal success.I enjoyed watching Damian perform. I buy it. I care about what will happen next. I enjoyed the brief peek into the LA police force political landscape, similar to the way it is portrayed in The Closer and, to a lesser extent, in LA CONFIDENTIAL. I want to watch as he unravels the 12 year old mystery of who was responsible for setting him up and uncovering their agenda. This is a fantastic show. Don't miss it.

Hilarious blend of genres plus Zen
I first watched Life - both seasons - while in bed recovering from surgery. I bought and rewatched it recently. Loved it then, love it now.The premise is in the description so I won't repeat that here. It's a new spin on a lot of the classic police procedural elements. The overall mood is similar to the first season of Dexter. Maybe toss in some original CSI and NCIS. Sometimes serious, sometimes funny. Predictable but lovable characters.I enjoy it because Charlie Crews - the main character - has this whole Zen perspective. Genuinely Zen. The first time I watched it, a lot of what he said was interesting but I couldn't quite grasp it. The timing in the show is great. The delivery is great -- it's typically delivered in a funny context, too. These aren't serious parts of the show. But that was 10 years ago. In that time, I've done a lot of studying and observing and meditating. Now, watching Life for the second time, I Get It. I'm really interested in the backgrounds of the writers because this stuff is legit. There is an underlying philosophy that connects everything. If this turns out to be someone pulling nice seeming quotes out of a book, then the person doing the pulling understands a lot more about the world than they are aware they do.Great show. Fun characters. Interesting relationship development. Has mostly good captions. It's only 2 seasons and it ends without leaving a bunch of unanswered questions.

One of the best unknown shows!
This is a great show. Our family has watched it several times. Funny but also has dark, dramatic elements that show affects of an individuals personal choices.

One of the BEST TV shows. EVER. Seriously.
I have run out of words for the utter disgust I feel towards the NBC network. They really, REALLY screwed up by canceling this INCREDIBLE show called Life. The peacock network has a habit of arrogantly canceling shows long before their time. They do away with quality programming for lesser quality shows that cost them pennies to produce. All they care about is the bottom line. If it's too expensive, too smart or high quality, you can forget about it having a long life on this networkk. It started with Surface. Remember the wonderfully creative show about oceanographers back in 2005/2006? If not, it's no wonder. They cancelled that after one season. Just one. They didn't bother to look beyond the numbers. If they had, they would have seen a very large fan base of loyal viewers. Surface went on to be one of the best selling TV series on DVD, still being steadily purchased almost 4 years later. And now we have Life. A show that was so unique, so intelligent, so funny, so high quality, so well scripted and acted that it's unlike any other show I've seen. Damian Lewis, Sarah Shahi & Adam Arkin were unbelievable in bringing deep, sensitive, complex characters to life. Sure, NBC gave Life two seasons, but wasn't fair to it when it was on. Like another reviewer mentioned, they bounced it all around the schedule like a rubber ball. They didn't promote it; I barely saw commercials when it was on. So instead of backing the show, putting their faith behind it, they just canned it like everything else that's good. Didn't even think twice. All for that so-brilliant idea of putting Leno on at 10 (robbing 5 shows a spot in prime time). What a great business move, guys!NBC shouldn't have to look further than their own decisions to figure out why they are failing miserably as a network, and why they don't have one hit show right now. Surface. Life. It's a miracle that Heroes is still on the air. They are so unfair to their shows in a way that's just beyond sad. NBC is chock full of executives who are their own worst enemies, and then scratch their heads as to why they fail. We, the viewers, suffer more than anyone. BRING BACK LIFE!!!!!But, if you are reading this review and haven't seen LIFE, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's amazing. Truly unique.
