Great book
My daughter loves this book. She was reluctant to start the book but admitted after reading it she really liked it and would like more books like it. I wish there were more Chinese stories written in English.

Awesome short stories w/ many helpful guides at end of book!
I certainly agree with the mother who is letting her adopted child know about her heritage, and I too can not wait for my daughter to be old enough to hear these short stories. My favorites where Dog Steals & Rooster Crows, Clever Magistrate and Mr . Yeh's New Year. Also what I would like to tell all readers is to be aware of the pronounciation guide, Glossary and the Source Guide as you read each story. They will help you with Chinese words you are unfamiliar with.

Works well with a Middle School Ancient China Curriculum
This past year, it was suggested to me my the publisher of our 6th grade social studies textbook to have the students read the Ch'I-Lin purse in conjunction with our chapter on Ancient China. I cannot tell you how much my students loved this book. They are just wonderful. Of particular interest to my 6th grade girls was the story of the carp fish who gives up her immortality for love. I also have to confess, I really enjoyed this book myself and plan that in years to come, should I have a daughter, I will be reading this book to her.

Great Selection of Traditional Stories
As a teacher of Chinese Mythology and Taoism, I have found this title to be useful for all ages.It offers a good range of stories from different parts of China, including some of the more fantastical tales and philosophical spins. The author/editor seems to have changed Chinese words and names with only a little bit of consistency, but that's OK. It works for the age group it's targeted at, and it's quite enjoyable for adults as well. It keeps the unacquainted from tripping over Chinese words.I highly recommend this text.

A Delightful Book
This is a delightful book. Other reviewers have said it is for children, but adults will also enjoy it. Each story has a wonderful ending showing the good that comes to you when you think of others. The book includes a pronunciation guide, glossary of terms, and information on the source of each story.

Interesting, Inspiring, Satisfying, Beautifully Illustrated, Enjoyable Read.
This collection of nine ancient Chinese stories retold by Linda Fang is both fascinating and enjoyable to read; but why only nine? There must be more of them around and, since they make such satisfying and inspiring reading, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to read many more of them. What makes them even better are the imaginative illustrations by Jeanne M Lee.Fortunately, we have here the kind of tales that attract the reader back to read them over and over again. They are also an antidote against the Grimm Fairy Tale style which relies too heavily on 'the youngest of three coming out on top' syndrome. Mercifully, there's none of that kind of thing here, but just well told, first class, attention holding tales for all ages. Thoroughly recommened.

Entertaining.
Interesting and entertaining stories from China in ancient times which I enjoyed reading. The stories often contain a moral element of right and wrong.

Great Stories
These were interesting and entertaining stories with morals taught in each. Many collected stories similar to Aesop fable but the stories are much longer (several pages). The only difficulty for young readers may be the pronunciation of a few Chinese objects and names if they are unfamiliar.

A gem of a book!
Our 10 year old daughter is what one calls a reluctant reader. Despite exposure to books of many genres, being in a family of book-lovers who have thousands of books, and visiting the public library regularly to discover books on her own, she rarely reads with relish. In fact, most books are considered "stupid and boring". She loves the Chronicles of Narnia, A Little Princess, The Secret Garden, and 5 Children and It. Short list. After a lot of research, I stumbled across Linda Fang's book. Jackpot; she loves it! Thank you, Ms. Fang! Butbut...only one book?! Noooo! We need more!
