The term 8 panel cap is often misused. It is taken to mean an old-fashioned style cap current from about 1901 thru 1925, with a short flexible visor and a tight-to the-head fitting crown. But both 8 and 6 panel caps fit that description and there is little difference in the fit or appearance between them except when soutache braid is added to the 8 panel cap to a dizzying effect. The last commercially manufactured 8 panel cap was worn by the 1938 Boston Braves. Thereafter it was simpler to standardize the 6 panel style.
