Yes, they allow xlr, 1/4" and speakon all in one strange universal socket. It's a good interface. I'm using it with an iMac and Logic Pro X. Couldn't be happier.

Can I plug a bass guitar directly into this without going thru an amp?

Yes, you can....but I wouldn't due to "impedance mismatch" or so I'm told. I would buy a DI box to use between your instrument and 2i2. Why?...because you barely turn up your instrument/preamp and it already clips red, but you can barley hear it, there is no real punch or power to the signal without using the DI box. When a DI box is used in the mix, you have much more headroom to turn up before you red clip your signal. I bought the ROLLS DB25b which also has an adjustment knob. A Sansamp bass pedal has a preamb and a DI built in. Hope this helps.
