Mother Empire
I got my copy yesterday and couldn't put it down. The book is in the voice of the author writing to himself as he goes through a day that is metaphorically like the journey of Ulysses or Joyce's Leopold Bloom. There is wonderful wordplay. While the book was written 25 years ago it has tremendous relevance to what is happening in Russia and Ukraine today. An amazing day trip for anyone who likes fast paced prose--I ordered it because it was recommended by Prof. Timothy Snyder in one of his Yale lectures covering Ukrainian history.

Five stars - the Soviet Union's end as told by a quirky Ukrainian poet
A funny/sad tale of a Ukrainian poet stuck in a Moscow dorm filled with a crazy assortment of other national writers as the Soviet Union disintergrates around them. Quirky, thoughtful dn funny at the same time The only draw back may be that people that are unfamiliar with the Soviet Union and Soviet life may not get all of the humor.

Interesting read. Mostly for people with interest in Contemporary Ukrainian literature.
I read this book for class, by the professor who did the English translation. Roughly, it's about characters in a dormitory of writers. It is written in many different styles. It is a must for readers with an interest in modern Ukrainian and former-Soviet country literature. I liked it, but it can be challenging.I am the husband of this Amazon user.
