Too expensive, too erudite (not in a good way...), mostly boring.
I was looking forward to read this as I've learned many of the Goldberg and listened to almost every recording of it since the early Gould recordings. The price - $36 or so - was a shock when I actually received the book and started reading it. Books this size are generally less than $10. At first, I thought the reseller (Amazon) was ripping, but then I went to the Cambridge UK website and found it's about the same price there. IF, the contents were interesting and compelling, I wouldn't have minded the price. But digging through the content was like walking thru deep mud as I looked for anything that really educated me about the Goldberg that I didn't already know. In spite of my dim view of Peter Williams' evaluation of the Goldberg, I was surprised to see that his book has been repeatedly printed and published. There must not be many if any alternatives. Cambridge should do better than this. Perhaps students of musicology would appreciate Mr. Williams' linking of small tidbits of the Goldberg to countless other works that I've never head of or care about; I had to dig to find things that I found actually interesting.I guess I've beaten the proverbial horse to death so I'll stop here. That said, I silently wonder to myself if I spent a month or two if I couldn't write a better book, and I'm not a professor of anything. Perhaps I will...

It has included much information about the piece. But the analysis of each variation can be even more elaborated. (if possible - i knew it is complicated.)
