Lute to Guitar
This book has Renaissance music from Dowland and others. It's more or less in progressive order: a section of beginner and then intermediate and advanced. The music is lute, transcribed for guitar. There are solos, some duets and some solos with voice and duos with voice. The Cd has renditions of this (not the greatest musical performance you ever heard, but good if you want a reference.)Some of the famous pieces like Mr. Drewrie's Accords and Wilson's Wilde (my fave) are here. As a player of less than a year, I was able to read through these easily enough. The fingering is ok--you can always figure out if you want changes for various reasons. The book is in standard musical notation. I don't like tablature. I realize many people play from guitar tabs but once you learn to read music, it's so easy to see the sound of piece as you sightread and eventually, you learn where the notes are on the guitar. I don't like dual notation and tabs so I'm quite happy with this book.Spagnoletta Anonymous (Solo) Page 22 2. Tanz Georg Fuhrmann (Solo) Page 23 3. Branle Gay Jean Baptiste Besard J(Solo) Page 24 4. The best book of its kind
This is an excellent best book of Renaissance songs for guitar. I also have volumes 1 and 2 of Renaissance Music for Guitar by Allan Alexander. Frederick Node's books are better - the node books have music notation and exclude tablature. I sort of understand why most guitar songbooks have tablatures, but I think they are a waste of space and you will be a better player if you just look at the music notes and ignore the tablature. This book is organized into 3 sections - beginning, intermediate, and advanced music. There is a little bit of information about each song before each song. There are some suggest fingerings. I have been playing for over 2 years and i was able to figure out how to play many of the songs. Each book of Renaissance music for guitar probably has different songs, so this book might not take away your need to buy other books but if you just want one book of Renaissance music for guitar, start with this one.

Excellent value
This is a great collection of Renessanse pieces.I am an intermediate guitar player (say, five years of playing) and the easy pieces are just immediately playable, intermediate are "browsable" (e.g. I can easily walk through them to get the idea) but would require a week or two to play smoothly, and "advanced" are hard, yet doable (I could probably take one as a 3-8 months project). For a beginner it might be a good book as well, just make sure you're familiar with music notation already. This is a nice collection of pieces with fairly thoughtful fingering and advices about difficult parts. This is not a self-help guitar/music text book, and it doesn't have tabs (I am so happy about that, tabs would probably make it twice thicker).Fingering is very good, and very thorough, sometimes with thorough right hand fingering. I disagree with fingering in some cases, but in any case, the proposed variant is at least "very good" if not "excellent".RE CD. I am a little bit disappointment, CD alone would get maybe "3 star". It's OK to illustrate pieces, it's done by a professional guitarist, but it's definitely far away from a "world-class concert level performance". E.g. the last few lines in Mudarra's Fantasia where bass line is main melody and upper voice is accompaniment: bass line is not emphasized (it's quieter than the accompaniment) and it's not at all smooth.

Renaissance Guitar - F. Noad
Have thoroughly enjoyed this collection.Just perfect for a peaceful night by the fireside with a gathering of companions!Nicely arranged into basic, intermediate and advanced.Very sweet music, I'm very fond of the galliards. A wide range of renaissance music including some classics - from solo pieces (e.g. Guardame Las Vacas) to pieces for Guitar and voice ('If My Complaints...') and the guitar duets such as La Rossignol.I'm determined to get to the more advanced material, especially two stand-out fantasias at the end by Dowland and Mudurra.Peace and happy playing!Ben :D

the renaissance guitar
I only bought this book two months ago and I have had many hours of joy out of it. It is fascinating to play a tune that was well known and popular 500 years ago; the historical introductions to the pieces are such an enrichment to the music, and indeed make you feel like a lute-player of those days. The suggestions/instructions for ways of playing the music are appropriate, and the technical grading of the pieces (advanced etc) very helpful. I am not sure why, but this book is better than The Baroque Guitar and The Romantic Guitar, which were pretty good already. A wonderful book with lots of joyful music

Definitely a good addition to the library shelves
I'm a musician. It's a music book. The content is broken down into beginners, intermediate and advanced sections and there are some duets and songs as well as the traditional lute music. Definitely a good addition to the library shelves.

A good graded collection of renaissance tunes
I've had this collection for several years, and never tire of playing from it. This time I bought it for a friend, who is equally pleased with it.
