Troy (DVD) (WS)

DVD or BlueRay?
I own both Blu-ray and Dvd version of this movie and there is a difference between the two.Without giving away too much I will simply say that some scenes are missing out of the DVD version. Once they are inserted the scenes seem to make more sense.Con:This movie should be viewed under an R rating due to some partial nudity in some areas and rough language may be troublesome. One would need to keep in mind that there will be ruthless war scenes that took place back in those days and they are well represented and is not for the faint of heart.

Acted without conviction, a styrofoam script brought to life by unsympathetic renditions.
This movie dismissively ignores the nuances and literary flourishes of the myth. The actors come together as a hodge-podge of casting errors, all thrown into a room together for a quick read-through. Brad Pitt is the Achilles Heel of the casting couch, a petulant turd whose character would have been beheaded, not mythologized, if he acted like a such a lazy brat in wartime. Even this Helen, supposedly the hypnotic honeypot of this Trojan debacle, is unsympathetic and uncompelling. She couldn't launch a thousand kayaks. Epic battle scenes alternate senselessly with macho brawls, free of all shrewdness or tactical credibility. The movie was written with condescension, as if the writers couldn't believe that their mass market audience could possibly tell the difference between Homer and this pablum. Bizarrely, it was a financial success, despite being pitched at 7th grade boys. Avoid.

Great ancient war epic but casting Brad Pitt was horrible
I really like this movie but I think Brad Pitt as Achilles was a horrible bit of casting. The film went with a Hollywood trope that all ancient Greeks and Romans have a British accent because they have no idea what ancient Greek or Latin sounds like. (They let Eric Bana slip by with his Australian accent thinking that most people won’t know the difference.) Hence Pitt tries really badly to sound English. Overlooking that the film is a good ancient war epic. The story revolves around love and power. Paris/Orlando Bloom of Troy falls in love with Helen/Diane Kruger who is the wife of Menelaus/Brendan Gleeson the king of Sparta. That allows Agamemnon/Brian Cox to go to war with Troy. The movie had a huge budget so it built gigantic sets, hired hundreds of extras to play the two opposing armies plus the people of Troy. Today this would all be done using CGI. I appreciated the realism in the giant battle scenes. Those are really the highlights of the film mixed in with some one on one battles like Hector vs Achilles.Out of the cast Peter O’Toole as Priam the king of Troy stands out for one scene where he gives a speech about respect between enemies. Bana is also good as the loyal brother and prince of Troy. They don’t really make big war movies like this anymore using real people instead of special effects.

Not Wholly Perfect, But Still Worthy of Olympus
One of my favorite movies of all time growing up. There will always be a sense of awe when Achilles first sheds blood with that signature jump stab, and always a little heartbreak knowing the fate of each individual protagonist. a beautifully realized historical telling of Homer’s Iliad, even if the delivery of certain lines could be improved. I would say Orlando Bloom’s Paris is easily the worst part of this film, and Patroclus could have been better acted as well. I never noticed before how many clever little nods there are scattered throughout the film to the actual poem. All in all, this is definitely worth the 3 hours of runtime, especially for any who appreciate history or have never seen the film before.

I watched it quite a few times and it is always amazing. Super entertaining, well done, and great storytelling. The director’s cut version adds important character development and gives you a deeper understanding for why characters make certain decisions.Just get it! Don’t think about it!! I HIGHLY Recommend it!

Great Movie. If you didn't like it, watch it again and see if you don't change your mind.
I really don't know why people did not love this movie. As someone who is pretty well versed in Greek History, I was particularly pleased to see this version of the Iliad. In particular, I was happy to see that they took the gods out of story to show that this drama could unfold without mythology and the idea that Achilles was fighting for glory, Menelaus for revenge, Agamemnon for greed, Hector for honor, Paris for love, and the Trojans for their lives.Peter O'toole was fantastic in his father-son conversation with Paris about the reasons for war and how any one reason isn't really any better than another. Brad Pitt plays a great brutish Achilles while Eric Bana's treatment of the conflicted Hector is perfect. Finally, the filming of the fight scenes were outstanding, especially the clean and beautiful choreography. The recent trend to shake the camera during fight scenes and employ too many close ups in lieu of diligent choreography was avoided and the result was fight scenes that were well crafted and perfectly orchestrated.Solid performance by everyone involved.

Film is great but this version makes it a bit worse
I really like this film but if to be honest the director's cut is much weaker than the theatrical in my opinion. First of all the film's pacing is not that efficient anymore, some extended battle scenes got new portion of the score which does not sound that well to me anymore (I personally think they just don't fit that well as in the original release and every film enthusiast will tell you that music plays an important part in the film). I don't think the extended version brings anything new to me it even makes it worse because if the changed score so if you want to buy it look for the original theatrical release.

Looks better on 2nd viewing on DVD
I was very disappointed with the movie when I saw it in the cinema. I finally watched it again on DVD and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.I usually enjoy this genre of movie even if the history gets fiddled about with(like it normally does), but I can't help feeling something is lacking still. I was always of the opinion the focus on the character of Achilles was the wrong take(with possibly the wrong actor playing him), and in terms of performance, Eric Bana as Hector was the star. None of that can be changed however, and viewing the movie as it is, it has good elements of ideas and action and provides a very enjoyable 156 minutes. The extras in this 2-disc set are very good, so for a little extra money it's worth it. The 2nd disc has behind the scenes featurettes and an animated guide to the Greek Myths explored in the movie...for those that don't know their Greek Mythology. In my opinion, the movie still has that epic feel to it and translates to DVD nicely, it just lacks the epic substance in the script and some of the acting...can't have everything! Still worth 4 stars!

Review 207
What can I add to reviews so far? Homer's Illiad it certainly isn't; I am not even going to begin, as some reviewers have done, to compare the two and list the deviations and omissions, a waste of time and energy. It is "Hollywood" at its best/worst (choose according to viewpoint and preferences). From fight scene one before the two assembled armies, my heart sank. Many people have obviously enjoyed it so I "don't want to rain on the parade". I found it unconvincing but, that's probably more to do with me than the film. I like to have my "historical films" approximating to the truth as we know it (after all its been good enough for generations!) and I wonder what future generations will know of some of our legendary characters, e.g Robin Hood, William Wallace and so on.Typical Hollywood "epic".

well worth a watch!
this extended cut really IS alot better than the original release! Half an hour longer, it fleshes out the characters much more, and the battle scenes are ALOT more bloody and graphic! If you like the movie, this version is well worth buying

Good entertainment value
As with all films, it entirely depends on what you are looking for:If you just want a film that purely entertains you...a film that is just good fun to watch, a film that keeps you pretty much transfixed and gives you some element of plot, with a demonstration of a whole raft of emotions and effects, within a historical context without demanding too much in terms of accuracy, purity and award winning acting, then this is a great film.Ok, some of the acting is a little weak and clearly some actors were cast to bring in the big dollars at the box office because of their sex appeal, rather than their passionate ability to make a character real.Equally, some of the finishing touches to the effects do look a little rushed but if you look past that, here is a film that broadly does what it says on the tin.The pace of the movie does chop and change quite a bit, but really only in the way you would expect (ie. the romance parts are quite drawn out sequences, whilst some of the superb action sequences happen at a frenetic pace.In my view, a movie of this type is there to entertain and not to win awards for historical accuracy, so on that basis, this is an entirely credible film that is definitely worth seeing.
