Traditionally it`s a shave mug with a bowl on top that is perforated with tiny holes. This allowed the water to drain off meaning they can only be used with solid shaving soaps. Scuttles also had a spout similar to a tea kettle which would dunk their shaving brushes in. Functional and a piece of art
The Moss Scuttle keeps the lather warm for a three-pass shave. Used with a Simpsons Chubby 2, the scuttle is a bit small but nonetheless the uneven surface helps in lathering. It is quite heavy especially when filled with water.Also remarkable is its quality and craftsmanship. It is clear that the scuttle is handmade from the moment you pick it up. You can even tell how it was made - from the pinches beside the spouts to the gentle grooves circling the scuttle. It has a wabi-sabi quality which you normally find in Japanese tea bowls. You can't help but admire it after cleaning the scuttle.Highly recommended.

This scuttle is too thick to actually keep anything warm. It does work well as a simple shaving soap holder.

A great scuttle that works
Tough to spend such a high price on a scuttle, but this one is worth it. Very effective and keeps lather warm. Probably the best scuttle I own.

Great Scuttle
This scuttle is superb. Its large bowl allows you to produce plenty lather quickly from a small amount of cream. It is much more efficient than other shaving bowls I've used. Of course the big bonus is that, filled with hot water, the lather is pleasantly warm and makes my shave more easier and more comfortable. Used with other quality ingredients, (good razor and blades, high quality shave cream) this takes shaving from a chore to a pleasure.

If you really want it
This is a fine scuttle, but $95.... really? There are other fine scuttles for half that and made in USA too.

Save some money for shave soaps by making this your first scuttle!
This scuttle beats the cheaper, mass-produced scuttles by leaps and bounds. The weight and mass of clay keeps lather warm longer than anything else I've tried. By adding hot tap water and pre-warming the scuttle while bringing 2 cups of water to a boil and swapping out the water, my lather is toasty warm for longer than my 40 minute ritual. The roughness of the finish not only succeeds in introducing copious amounts of air to the lather, it also has the side benefit of retaining a bit of scent from my soaps which lingers throughout the day.This scuttle might cost a bit more than others, it is by far a better value given it's performance and it's beauty. Now that I have mine safely in hand, I can whole-heartedly state that you owe it too yourself to save your money for shave soaps, and just buy this before being frustrated by sub-standard scuttles.

Works great, looks good,well made. Not much more to say about this scuttle but this thing requires more words to be accepted..
