Lavish production and costumes
Settings and costumes are stupendous but the later (and maybe more interesting...) parts of Kschessinska's life are not included.

Suspect history made palatable by superb production values and good acting.
While the filmmakers may have taken liberties with history (the train incident at Borki, for example, occurred when Nicholas II was a boy, not an adult), the production values are superb and should have been nominated for an Academy Award. Lars Eidinger is a dead-ringer for the late tsar (no pun intended). It's a shame however, that almost 30 years after the fall of communism, that Russian filmmakers still don't know what to do with the character of Alexandra Feodorovna. She is almost always portrayed as a villain, whereas in fact she was far more complicated.

Very interesting movie, well acted with excellent costuming, sets. The English subtitles are timed well with the Russian audio.

EXCELLENT FILM BUT ENGLISH SUBTITLES CEASED ABOUT 31 MINUTES BEFORE THE END.
This is an excellent film. I can understand why some members of the Russian Orthodox church were offended. Some even tried to have the film banned in Russia. Still marvelous in acting, directing, screenplay, etc. However, the English subtitles ceased about 31 minutes before the end.

Spectacular Russia of the Tzars
Very good film, Hard to find and not well know in the World. In Russia have many problems because it present Nicolas II like a man and not that a Saint, like the Ortodox church considered the Y arte, maybe not stricly historic, but a spectacular film very well done, the presentation of the imperial Russia is excelent, great actors. Really a great movie.

One star.
A gorgeously produced schlock fest. So glad Nicky and his family aren't around to witness what the film industry can do to embellish a sweeping, fascinating and heartbreaking slice of history.

Interesting, dramatic movie.
Not a bad movie. Lovely costumes and colourful. Interesting, but I doubt the last czar would have had a full blown romance with this ballerina. He passionately loved his wife czarina and his children. Unfortunately he was a failure as a leader, but strangely he didn't want to be the czar of Russia in the first place. Very tragic ending for him and his family. I think he and his family was canonised recently.
