The master. My favorite tenor sax player.
Wow! Genius. Can't praise the late Mr. Ammons enough. Am ashamed to admit I did not even know about him until I saw the movie Fading Gigolo. Ammons' music was part of the movie soundtrack. Heard him playing the tenor sax & I knew I had to buy the soundtrack, plus other CDs by Gene Ammons.Get it. You won't regret it. Man died in his mid-50s. Way too young.FOR JAZZ LOVERS, as well as lovers of great sax music.

These selections were tracks that we grew up listening to as kids so of course we love them. Found a few we hadn't heard before and like those as well however there are tracks that we either dont like at all, or you just have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to these tracks because the story is still true and its painful.

Very, very tasty
Gene Ammons is surely the most underappreciated sax player of the 50's and 60's. He was always swingin' and melodic at the same time. He did not venture into any inaccessable areas of jazz as did some of his contemporaries. the music is fresh, cool and delightful on each of these albums. There is a lot of music here, including a nice mix of ballads and swing tunes in be-bop style. These songs are impossible to find in any condition on LP, and yet the sound is very good, better than some other Real Gone releases. This 4 CD set is a real bargain. Enjoy!

good gene ammons
I am spoiled! I have heard AMAZING Gene Ammons from the 60's, and this is from the 50's, so it is not as good, in my opinion, but it is still great jazz. Ammons in his prime is hard to beat--Ben Webster can do it--not many others in my opinion. Ammons and Webster are amazing for ballad playing. Get Jug albums or CDs!!

Very good value
This is classic Gene Ammons. It's 6 original albums crammed into 3 CDs. No frills (liner notes, etc.), but a terrific buy if you don't already have any or many of the albums. Sound quality is acceptable. I'd recommend it, if you like Gene Ammons and don't have at least 2 or 3 of these albums already.

A 'Jugful' of Delight
'Jug' Ammons albums can be difficult to obtain, so this is a great opportunity to lay your hands on six of his best, for minimal outlay. Sound quality is good throughout, and five of the six albums feature only four extended tracks (from 7 to 14 minutes each). 'Happy Blues' features Jackie McLean alto and Art Farmer's trumpet, with Duke Jordan on piano; 'Jammin in Hi-Fi' keeps McLean, but Mal Waldron takes over keyboards thereafter, and Idress Sulieman on trombone and Kenny Burrell on guitar. Pepper Adams baritone sax is the major change in 'Blue Gene', while there's an early Coltrane appearance on alto & tenor sax, and some sublime flute by Jerome Richardson on both 'Groove Blues' and 'Big Sound'.'Boss Tenor' has Ammons as solo horn, and Tommy Flanagan replaces Waldron on piano, while Art Taylor on drums is the only other band member to appear throughout. Varied and lively as the various band combinations are, my particular favourite is 'Boss Tenor', as Ammons is more able to influence the mood of the pieces, and this allows the balladeer to come through on gorgeous pieces such as 'Close Your Eyes' and 'My Romance'. If you enjoy this side of Ammons, his The Gene Ammons Story: Gentle Jug is an exquisite combination of two ballad-heavy albums, which are bewitching from first to last.Although 'Real Gone Jazz' provide personnel, album dates and track lengths, there as usual is no additional information. However, this should be adequate for most, and the overall quality & price of this set, makes it very attractive. The Gene Ammons Story: Gentle Jug

The Jug Bands
Gene Ammons over 6 "classic" albums maybe stretching it a bit. This reviewer certainly cannot see them as being remotely "classic" but they are very "workman-like",and in all fairness, none the worse for that. Ammons has a very basic saxophone technique and can be somewhat lacking in ideas. If Getz is Pavarotti - then Ammons is Howling Wolf - very bluesy and somewhat raw and repetative. However the CDs are packed with some very handy sidemen who certainly help things along - principle among whom are the marvelous Pepper Adams (who crops up on no less than 3 of the albums) Jackie Mclean, Art Farmer and Indress Sulieman(wrongly credited as performing on trombone rather than upon trumpet). There is also John Coltrane lurking in the background supposedly playing both tenor and alto saxes!! You get plenty of basic,no-nonsense blowing for your money. A great deal of it for very little outlay.

Selected Gene Ammons Sessions.
These are all fine and well-recorded jam session type dates by tenor saxophone giant Gene Ammons. Loads of great Jazz stars here and on some tracks a chance to hear John Coltrane on alto saxophone! Alto was Coltrane's first horn. Here he is fully developed and is amazing on the smaller, higher horn. Solid stuff from selected 50s dates for Prestige.
