Good.
We have grey slate shale from our well. This is easier to change than the screen on the clothes washer. The washing machine mfg. can void the warranty without it, I was told by a service man, I do have a whole house filter also which I'm changing monthly. The builder lost the filter I had with the filter reservoir, and turned on supplt to my new house without it, I've had to clean all faucet screens after I put in the filter. I haven't had to replace the filter in this small filter for over a year.

Cannot live without this.
Our water is so hard it kills our washers or we have to clean washer screen often, which is not in a convenient location on the washer. This was a game changer for us. This is our second one first we had about a year then we cleaned it and got another year. Now on our second one.

A great device
This device is very well engineered. Once in place, it is quite robust. Some fault the plastic (nylon) threads. As is always the case with such threads, you must take great care that you have not cross threaded the connection, but once a good connection is made, it is quite substantialThe cartridge of this filter filter features a fine screen filter which by itself will probably satisfy my needs plus another filter consisting of a half dozen or so layers of cloth filters. What I needed was a filter that would catch particles coming through and stopping up the screen filters in my washing machine. The screen filter in this cartridge is probably fine enough for that. In my well system there is apparently some very fine material coming through that stops up the cloth filter within 2 or 3 weeks. For me that super fine filtration is not necessary, but I can see that it might be needed in other situations. To this point, when the cloth filter stops up, I remove the screen filter, use a dentists tooth scraper tool to remove the cloth filter, remove the one or two stopped up layers of cloth and replace the remaining layers and screen and put it back on the machine.I would have given this a five-stare rating were it not for its ridiculously high price of the replacement filter. Other that that one caveat, I give my highest recommendation for this device..Update 7/20/14. The cloth filters in this device were clogging too frequently so I removed them, relying solely on the fine screen type filter mentioned earlier. That was 2 or 3 months ago and all seems to be going well with this arrangement.

May be saving my washer.
I live in a really old house that doesn't have any filtration. I had to clean out the back of my washer regularly every time it rained because mud would come through and it would beep until I cleaned it. I just paid my washer off a little over a year ago and was really worried it would crap out because of the mud that would cycle through. Now when I put detergent in the little drawer thing I pull out, it doesn't have mud residue in it. So, far so good. I think I've been using it for 3 months now. And it is doing the job.

Works GREAT!
Our clothes were being ruined by the sludge in our old water pipes going straight to the washer. With these filters the clothing is nearly back to normal. These are easy to install and just as easy to remove for cleaning. I'm well pleased with this purchase.

Great filter, but housing leaks
I have purchased four of these filters in the last ten years because I can't find a more convenient and easy-to-install replacement. However, the housings leak sooner or later, some right away, some after a couple of years of use.
