This plant is grown for the beautiful soft green foliage, which turns red after summer. Its ornamental bushy appearance is ideal for bordering, container planting, hedging and screening. Flowers are inconspicuous. Kochia Scoparia seeds need light to germinate, so the surface sowing is required. Seeds can be started indoors or directly outdoors. Sow the seeds outdoors in spring after the last frost has passed in a rich well-drained soil. Best soil pH is 6-7. Rake the soil and press slightly seeds into the surface. The best place to grow the plant is in full sunlight. Germination will occur when the soil reaches +50ºF. Thin for single plants to final spacing 20-24 inches and for hedging 8 inches. Give average water until established. Once established the plants are drought tolerant. Start seeds inside 7-8 weeks before you plant them outside. Soak seeds overnight and plant them in peat pots. Put the pots under the light. Germination will occur in 1-2 weeks. Transplant the plants outside at the end of spring. Plants will self-sow around the garden. Reproducing seeds needs to be controlled by preventing development of seed heads, otherwise it can spread long distances. Mow frequently to not let it grow beyond 18 to 26 inches. In the warm climates’ zones, please check with the State Department of Natural Resources in your State whether you are allowed to plant this plant in your area.
