100 Greatest Ancient Coins Hardcover – March 12, 2019

I have several books that cover Greek and Roman coins, and some of them are disappointing. But this book is simply the best. It covers all popular ancient coins that I am interested in such as Athens Tetradrachm, Alexander the Great Tetradrachm, Corinth Stater, Lysimachus [Alexander] Tetradrachm, and Jerusalem Temple Shekel.The coins are listed in chronological order, as it should be, not in rank order nor in alphabetical order. I have other book that listed the coins in alphabetical order according to the name of town, which makes me confused to find a particular coin. In contrast, I have no trouble finding a particular coin with this book. After all, there are only 100 coins in this book. In fact, I don't need to know all of those 100 coins. I just want to know some of the most popular ancient coins.I cannot afford to buy any of these coins in this book. I don't even want to buy any of those coins if I have the money since I think they are too expensive. I'd rather buy modern silver coins like American Silver Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, or 2019-S Kennedy Half Dollar Silver Proof. However, this book makes me want to buy the replicas of some of those ancient coins. (Normally, I don't want to buy any replicas or "counterfeit" coins).

I'm a huge fan of this book. The coin selection is really interesting, the photos are great, and the peripheral content on collecting is top notch. A great, historically informative introduction to ancient coins.

Amazing book. Has a coin size chart. Enlargments of old coins. Explinations are great little tidbits if history. Just wish estimated mintage or current circulation of all the coins explained was standard. Price guide is super off by Heritage Auctions past history. But the price guide was never going to stay the same. Wonderful book. In cronological order.

Fantastic large colored pictures. While one may not agree with selection and ranking of the top 100, I found it historically relevant and insightful. Especially liked the Croesus section.While most of these coins are financially untouchable for just about everyone, there were a handful of coins that most of us could collect. Albeit not in the top grades pictured. I even have 3 coins in my collection already and have identified a few more to attempt to add. As for the rest, well that’s what dreams are for.The historical introduction section was well written, very informative and entertaining. The discussion of pricing the best I have read anywhere- this alone would have me seek out author’s shop if I lived near Chicago.

This is a beautifully written book, with helpful information for new and seasoned collectors alike. I especially enjoyed Mr. Berk’s stories behind the coins - he makes ancient history come alive. The pictures of coins are high quality, making this an excellent coffee table book.

Harlan Berk's reputation in numismatics is worldwide. This book--the second edition--shows why. The beautifully illustrated coins are thoughtfully and accurately described, with special attention to their historical context and artistic merit. No matter how much you think you know about ancient coinage and history, you're sure to find something new here. An unbeatable book, especially for the price.

good book to start learning about ancient coins

If you have the 1st edition don’t waste your money. This is almost identical except for a few additional pages at the beginning of the book. The list is the exact same except for one coin from Syracuse that was number 17 is replaced with another coin from Syracuse. The other 99 are identical and did not move up or down the list. Lazy 2nd edition; easy way for author to make money by calling it a 2nd edition.
