It’s all in how you pop it.
Look at these two photos. They are exactly the same popcorn kernels. From the same bag. It matters how you pop your popcorn.Since I read mixed reviews, I tested it in a small batch - just 1/4 cup, in a pan I would normally use 1/3 to 1/2 cup of kernels to pop. Oh my!! What a beautiful mushroom popcorn it produced! I was pleasantly surprised. Then I did my normal amount, about 1/2 cup to cover the bottom of the pan. This time, most of the kernels popped like regular butterfly popcorn. What a disappointment!!So I learned. 1) Stovetop works great for mushroom popcorn. (I was previously advised to use air popper but it wasn’t great) 2) Do not crowed the pan! Put half of what you’d normally do. The kernels apparently need enough space to heat up to pop to its maximum potential. 3) Good quality oil is a good thing.I am extremely happy with this popcorn.

Wabash put regular popcorn in their mushroom/caramel bags in the batch I received!
I was excited to try the mushroom type kernels to make caramel corn in my Whirley-pop, but was disappointed when all the popcorn had "wings" instead of "balls", as it was supposed to be. See my pictures if you want to see the "batch" and date stickers.Amazon gets 5 stars for an immediate refund. Wabash loses credibility for not being more careful of putting the wrong type of popcorn in their bags at the factory. I'll try to buy the mushroom kernels from another brand, since I'd like to make caramel corn.By the way, I called Wabash to tell them and they didn't seem to care about their packaging error, so I won't buy this overpriced brand again.

Fabulous Popcorn and Virtually No Hulls
I am so grateful for the person who wrote the review about how she cooked it to make it turn out right. I want to add a few more details to assure the popcorn will turn out great. I don't own an air popcorn popper and not sure I would use it on these mushroom kernels based on reviews I read before I bought them. I also don't own a pan that I could just ruin as the "popcorn pan".I used my 8-quart Calphalon pan and glass lid. I melted enough coconut oil to cover the bottom of the pan and waited until I could see the steam rising because the oil was hot. I put in 1/2 cup of the yellow Wabash kernels and put the lid on right away and set my timer for 3 minutes. It didn't take that long. Maybe two minutes. The pan was perfectly full to the brim with succulent, fluffy popcorn. I added sea salt and some non-dairy "butter" called Melt. Yum and ee!!! I mowed through the bowl before I thought of taking a picture. Al you get to see in the picture I did take, there a few small kernels left since I got FULL and virtually no hulls. I will try to remember to take a picture and add it to this next time.Bottom line - High heat oil like coconut or grapeseed in a hot pan will make it turn out perfect! Happy popping!!!

My favorite is the big yellow
I purchased the extra large (mushroom), big yellow, and baby white popping corn. All have good flavor. The extra large mushroom are more tough of the 3, would be good for kettle corn, did not absorb much butter., they do have a lot of husks. The big yellow is your theater butterfly popcorn, they “squeak” and have a good crunch they have some husks , less than store bought popped corn, are excellent at absorbing the butter or coconut oil. THe small white is very small, very light not much flavor, I would say eating them individually they have less husks, eating a handful they have more than the big yellow but less than the mushroom. They do absorb the butter but not as much surface area so not as much absorbtion.

Not what was claimed in the packaging
I bought this package of so called mushroom kernels in my continued effort to finding real mushroom kernels. These were not mushroom kernels..... They were butterfly.... Plain and simple....I read in the comments that I'm not the only one to complain. In fact read your own comments sent to you....I thought it was funny that after the disappointment of the first order I tried a second time and what did I see.... You stopped making mushroom kernels packaging and sent me for a second time THE WRONG SEED....Twice you used unfair advertising to get me to buy TWICE....thats on me...Never going to be a third from me.

Tough to chew
I bought this product because I had used it before and before it was good. It had a best if used by label on it and it had long expired and tasted like it so I thought to throw out the balance and buy some more. This new package arrived (did not have a label on it to say when it had expired), made some in my brand new popcorn machine and they came out small and chewy as in "stale" tasting. I wrote Wabash and told them of my experience. They told me popcorn does not expire as long as I kept in closed seal tight container. Note this package was brand new and I popped it the day I received it. They asked how I used it and I explained I popped according to directions in a brand new pop corn machine. They have never responded back to me. Oh well, I'm saddened because the first bag (that had expired) was so good.

Last time I try a different popcorn.
I have used Pop Secret Jumbo Popcorn for several years now. I use either a Stir Crazy conventional electric popper or a microwave popper and every time I get great popcorn. As a fluke I ordered Wabash Valley Farms Big Yellow popcorn as it had decent reviews. I( popped it in both the Stir Crazy and the Microwave poppers. What I got was small, not fluffy pop corn with chewy hulls and not great flavor. I then tried popping on my stove in a pot. Same results. Either I got a bad batch or other reviewers are less picky. Regardless I am back with my Pop Secret Jumbo Pop and will not stray again!

Disappointed with Amazon
The media could not be loaded. I had this before and was very good so i ordered 3 packages. The problem is that 2 of the 3 came with a VERY expired date. 1 year expired. That makes the kernels very dry and dosen't pop properly. Its a very expensive popcorn and 2 bags are useless. And Amazon dosen't take return or refund on food itens.....Edit: After contacting Amazon, they promptly sent me 2 new packeges. Not disappointed anymore :)

Don’t let the popping stop!
Finding popcorn during COVID has been a challenge. It seems everyone wants it these days. I used to buy popcorn from the grocery store to use in my hot air popper, but they were out. I bought this for 19.99. Very costly for popcorn. With that said it blows the cheaper stuff out of the water. The grocery store stuff, even though it would pop, tasted a bit stale. This stuff is awesome. Has a good crisp crunch. I’d you add enough butter and salt you’d feel like you are at the movies. I highly recommend - if you want to spoil yourself with some expensive popcorn ! The best part, this was available so the popping didn’t have to stop!

Chewy and dense
The 3 is a generous 3 IMHO but it might just be a taste thing. I have used a Whirlypop popper for 20+ years and I can say this is the first corn that performed poorly. The best before date was 2022 and the package was sealed and intact. No matter what I did (more oil/less oil, more salt/less salt, lower heat/higher heat) I could not get a satisfactory batch of popcorn. Every time resulted in dense, small and tough kernels. I gave up after 6 batches and went back to my “usual” brand of popcorn. Maybe I got a bad batch or maybe I don’t appreciate a chewier/dense popcorn but this stuff isn’t for me and now has been trashed.

Thanks reviewers/This is great
Thanks to all the reviewers for rating this so highly. I took a stab and bought 2 packages. Yes, it was pricey. More so than Redenbacher's but positive reviews were absolutely correct.I'd say it popped up about the same size as OR popcorn, some a little larger, but where this popcorn excels is in the lack of chewy pieces. It pops nice an airy, without that overly chewy bits in OR. Even hubby noticed the difference right off the bat.Like the fact they tell you how to store it as well.I poured several batches of the kernels in to mason jars and sealed them down with my Food Saver Machine. That way I can open and close one jar while the others stay sealed and air tight to keep the moisture in the kernels as Wabash recommends.

Got exactly what I thought I bought, so surprises.
First popcorn used so don't really know whether the cost/pound is good or not compared to others. What I do know is that this popcorn is very tasty, few hulls, and you can count the unpopped kernels on one hand. I use kernels, coconut oil, and Flavicol in my movie style popper, then add clarified butter after, and yes, it makes movie style popcorn. Will update some comparative results as I try more brands.
