Behlen Retarder Quart (2-Pack)

This is the best stuff! Behlen makes the best products, I am a Luthier and they have a whole line of products geared toward us. This is what you need to add to your lacquer when it’s way too hot or humid to be spraying. If you get little white bubbles, or whitish haze under the lacquer, use this. It will slow the lacquer from getting a skin on it and allow the moisture to escape. It also helps the lacquer lay down flatter and glassier. 5% is what they call for, and that’s what I mix it to. Works great for me. I also use it to blend cracks in older instruments that have checking in the lacquer using a fine art brush. Killer stuff.

I used this product to slow the drying time of a lacquer finish. The lacquer still dries quickly ( I used 5% retarder, which is the least recommended), but the lacquer levelled better than without the retarder. It created a nice finish that didn't require a lot of sanding, and I brushed it on.

The dryness in Colorado makes applying (brushing) lacquer challenging at times. By using Behlen's at just over 5% the open time is slightly longer, enough to get a smooth beautiful finish with a good brush. Don't over thin - it will sag or never dry. Experiment and use just enough to get the consistency you want. Great product.

I whole heartedly recommend this retarder. Worked great for me on my Minwax brushable lacquer allowing me to roll out without drying too fast.
