Coleus plants have an incredible range of natural color variation from bright chartreuse to hot pink and velvet-black. Leaves range from 1 to 6 inches long in different shapes and sizes; lacy, ruffled, smooth, twisted, solid colors with have contrasting edges.Vigorous growers with leaf size ranges from 1- 8 inches or more, and plants can grow up to 36 inches tall. Can be used in your gardens, containers, patio gardens and flower arrangements. In the zones 10-11 you can start seeds directly outdoor. Outside these zones, it’s recommended to start indoors. Start indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost. As seeds need sunlight to germinate, scatter or gently press seeds on the surface of a fine, damp seedling mix, and water them with a gentle mist. Plant 3-4 seeds in each pot or cell. Set them under indoor fluorescent lighting. The seeds will germinate in 14-20 days with the temperature 75°F - 80°F. Under cooler conditions, it can take up to 30 days. Transplant out when the soil has warmed to about 70°F, spacing plants 16-18 inch apart to create space for growing and for plants not to become leggy. To plant outdoors, amend the soil with compost and moisten it with water. Spread the seeds over the surface of the soil and cover them with a very thin layer of soil. If the soil dries before the seedlings germinate, water it gently using a watering can. For better germination the seeds can be refrigerated for one week before sowing.
